Because for any lefty (or even someone just perceived as even moderately leftish or even middle of the road) to be legitimate in right-winger’s eyes, we have to be what they would consider morally perfect. We can’t have anything in our background they don’t approve of. Of course this does not apply to them at all, they can do whatever they want.
