Cheeckyness to the highest level. If you´re extempt to pay taxes as God´s servant(Jesus didn´t say so, as far as I am concerned), you´re exempted, as well, to demand funds to spread your stupid theory. Be consequent. And being a Christian as you supposedly are, treat your workers with justice.
He claimed he was never notified?!? Heck, he had to respond on this issue repeatedly for years before they even actually arrested him! It's not like they don't have the records. His lawyer is as big a fool as he is for trying to make an assertion that stupid; that's even worse than the "religious exemption" claim.

Well, Hovind et al are exempt from using highways, public social services and don't talk about hospitals! Because, Jesus heals, in case you did not know! And the visitors of his stupid theme park, they were brought there by God himself, because they are living in Gods own country, where God works wonders every minute (like flying random people to a fraudsters theme park).

Archaeopath: Actually, lawyers are infamous for doing their very best for their clients, often even especially the ones they despise, so I doubt that's it. More likely, he was instructed by Hovind to make that lame claim; my guess is that Hovind at this point wasn't seriously expecting to avoid conviction (though he may still have hoped to avoid jail time, and I hope he's wrong about that) and is going to try to milk this whole situation for all the martyr points he can get.
Lies about science
He could have paid up and walked away with a fine right up to the court date. Sometimes they put you in jail not so much for the crime but your absolute disrepect and steadfast claim that you are above the law.
