By thinking the Earth is billions of years old. Each layer sat there for millions of years waiting for the next one. Which of course brings up the obvious question, where's this material coming from? You know, you keep adding to the Earth to get this mile thick geologic column. Where's all this dirt coming from? It has to come from somewhere.

How to do a straw man as shown by Kent Hovind...

First , take the claim you are arguing against...

"thinking the Earth is billions of years old"

Second, twist, spin or just lie about that claim so it no longer is the claim you are arguing against but something completely different....

"Each layer sat there for millions of years waiting for the next one."

Finally, "WIN" the argument by then showing how the false claim you just made up is stupid or impossible...

"where's this material coming from? You know, you keep adding to the Earth to get this mile thick geologic column. "

And there's your strawman, set up and knocked down.

This has been another lesson on how to make a fallacious argument by Kent Hovind.

I agree the joke has worn thin. And would be totally inappropriate in a science forum. Yet as werewolf so aptly expressed it, FSTDT is an ART forum. An art of satire and snark, admittedly. And there cannot be any great art without the constant striving of mediocre artists to become great.
Admittedly, seeing the contributions of a DoctorWhom, or Mr Spak, or Old Viking or Illuminatalie or Jezebels Younger Sister, it's hard to believe that practice and failure paid any part in the development of such genius, yet it must be so. Consider; the South Park Mormon episode would never have been created without Parker and Stone sharing a fondness for fart jokes.
It's fortunate indeed that this is NOT a science site, for the science of many of us who have written in response is quite shaky. We would do well to take our own advice and look it up.
That a persistant intellectual fraud like Hovind should be suffering the consequences of dishonesty is a source of gratification to many. None of us really know the circumstances of Hovind's incarceration, few if any of us are being other than fanciful in the depiction of his non-judicial punishment. I don't believe that any of us would truly assert that we are in favour of gay rape, though admittedly in Hovind's case we'd have to struggle hard with our consciences before declaring that opinion.
In Summary: You're right dude. But lighten up, this isn't a science forum, and we don't mean it all literally. And yes, the joke HAS worn thin.

We're not the ones who avoided paying their taxes - certainly under the guise of a religious institution/organisation.

As the old saying goes, 'If you can't do the time, don't do the crime'. And if you can't take the jokes, don't create the conditions for said jokes to develop in the first place.

And Kent Hovind should know - as he lives in America - that rape is the national sport in US prisons.

And when he leaves prison after doing his 10 years, with his reputation - and his arsehole - in tatters, hopefully the whole (pun intended) experience should impress upon him one fact: being a religious freak isn't all it's cracked up to be.

Richard Dawkins isn't in prison. Just sayin'.

See, there's this stuff called "rock" around--you might have seen some?

Anyway, there's an awful lot of it. Like most other things, it can break down over time when it's exposed to the elements, things like wind and water. There are things that like to grow on it, like lichens, that just love many of the minerals it's made of, and they leech them out using acids and specialized enzymes, and the rocks weaken, crack and bust into smaller bits. And when it's broken into smaller bits, everything from hungry bacteria to wave action and chemical reactions with water continue breaking it down further. You finally end up with sand, silt and clay. And the things that fed on it die and rot, and their rotting carcasses mix with the sand, silt and clay, giving some of the minerals that were originally a part of the rock back to the mix.

And that is the story of dirt.
