"Ooh, she'll raise so much money." "Ooh, women want a woman president." In the immortal words of General Anthony McAuliffe: "Nuts!"

Win the White House? Hillary couldn't win a popularity contest if she was the only contestant.

5. The Ideology Factor – Hillary has been reliably (as times outrageously) left since the Sixties. She was the radical rudder of the Clinton administration. Granted, she's not as rabid as Elizabeth Warren, but who is? "Don't let anyone tell you that, you know, it's corporations and businesses that create jobs," said she speaking at a political rally in Boston last year. She tried to nationalize health insurance 16 years before Obama. After eight years of ideology run amuck, are we ready for four more?

6. The Meanness/Anger Factor – On the stump, Hillary projects two emotions – anger and euphoria. She alternates between the vacant smile of a Stepford Wife and shouting. She's a frustrated, middle-aged feminist who's perpetually incensed. This persona is why so many young women reject the feminist label, even when agreeing with the movement on some issues. Again, she's famous for outbursts, airborne objects and cold disdain. In the White House, when a Secret Service agent refused to act as a bellboy, she screamed "Stay the (expletive deleted) away from me!" In a candidate for the nation's highest office, righteous indignation is one thing, rage and nastiness something else.

10. The Hideousness Factor – Lyndon Baines Johnson was the last profoundly ugly candidate to be elected president, and he was a legacy of the martyred JFK. Voters don't want a leader who looks frazzled or frumpy. We're told that Lincoln was too homely to be elected president in an age of television and paparazzi. But Lincoln's homely face had a dignity, a gravitas. If nothing else, we want a face that reassures us, not one that scares us, a la Night of the Living Alinskyites.

Conservatives might as well get in their licks in now. After Iowa, we won't have Hillary to kick around any more.

Too many of my fellow Americans believe in Obama Claus – the smug community-organizer elf who stuffs stockings with Obama-phones, food stamps, extended unemployment benefits, health insurance for "30 million uninsured" and other welfare state goodies.

But does Santa steal to pay for the presents he leaves? Does he pick the pockets of parents to buy toys for kids? Does he spy, harass, lie and intimidate? Does he monetize the debt by inflating the currency? Is his sleigh loaded with 7% unemployment, growing dependency, and fatherless families? Does he promote poverty, which increased 16.7% under Obama?

Does Santa vacation at posh Martha's Vineyard digs, spend more time on the links than in the workshop, and then lecture us on our obligation to the less-fortunate?

Where do the presents in Obama Claus's bag come from? Do elves in the North Pole make them, or are they extracted from the peasantry? Are the "rich" the reindeer harnessed to this Santa's sleigh? With the energy expended in pulling it, is there any left over for creating wealth and generating jobs?

The spirit of human kindness does not drive us to larceny, regimentation and destruction of the economy.

Symbols are important – cupid for love, the flag for loyalty – though the virtues they represent exist independently.

It's nice to have a merry old fellow with a twinkle in his eye to personify kindness and the urge to give – especially at a time of the year that represents sharing for so many. The warmth of the ideal penetrates even the cold and dark of the season.

Newspaperman Francis Pharcellus Church had it right in an 1897 editorial answer to little Virginia O'Hanlon. "Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus. He lives as certainly as love and generosity and devotion exist."

He lives in all of us, if we connect with him. When you put change in a Salvation Army kettle, when you donate to a food bank, when you volunteer for a charity, when you spend time with a child, when you try to sooth a troubled spirit, when you reach out to a stranger – you are Santa Claus.

This Santa can do anything – even overcome bureaucratic inanity, racial grievances and politically correct penguins.

Compassion and politics are a volatile mix. In the guise of fighting poverty, 1960s Great Society programs destroyed the black family and gave us an 80% out-of-wedlock birth rate in the inner city.

Currently, anti-family ideologues are playing the compassion card against those of us who resist the deconstruction of marriage. In his majority opinion overruling DOMA, Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy said defenders of the natural family are telling gays that their unions are inferior to ours. No wonder homosexuals think Republicans are mean.

Compassion was used to sell legalized abortion. Feminists demanded empathy for the victims of biology. "What are you going to do about the 16-year-old who's pregnant? Tell her to carry the baby to term – ruining her hopes of getting an education, having a career, perhaps even marrying? Exposing her to the horrors of a back-alley abortion?" The mainstream media insist that the gender gap is the result of the GOP's mean-spiritedness, designated the Republican war on women.

Beginning with Roe, four decades of liberal compassion have resulted in 56 million dead babies, not to mention falling fertility and the decline of marriage, to the great detriment of women as well as men.

Ultimately, it's all academic. Hispanics don't vote on social issues. Only one House member whose district borders Mexico voted against Obamacare. In pursuit of government deluxe, newly enfranchised illegals will elect a host of welfare-state Democrats, who will vote predictably on abortion, marriage and judicial nominations. In the name of caring for the least-among-us, evangelicals will end up electing a lot of pro-abortion, anti-marriage leftists.

The strangers among us include a quarter of all inmates in the federal prison system. With another 297,000 in state prisons and jails, they comprise 16.4% of the country's total prison population. Apparently, murder, rape and vehicular homicide are jobs Americans won't do.

Compassion is for families, friends, neighbors, churches and charities.

Political compassion has resulted in most of the horrors of modernity – from the French Revolution (liberty, equality and fraternity aren't bad things) to communism (to each according to his need), to the destruction of the black family (in the name of a war on poverty) to the war on the family (in the name of equality).

What the left never learned some on the right are quickly forgetting.
