"Father in racism custody case says writing on child's skin is free expression

(CP) – 1 hour ago

WINNIPEG — A Manitoba man says the provincial government had no right to seize his children after one of them showed up to school with racist slogans and drawings on her body.

In newly filed court documents, the man argues the government has violated his Charter rights by preventing he and his wife from "expressing themselves to their children".

Manitoba Child and Family Services is seeking permanent care of the couple's two children and final arguments are set for Sept 25.

In its final submissions, the government argues freedom of expression does not extend to writing slogans in permanent marker on children's bodies.

The government also says the couple's racist beliefs were only one factor in the decision to seize the children, and alleges the kids were neglected and raised in squalor.

No one involved in the case can be identified under Manitoba law."
