And how can you say there are no American Muslims when you also say that you used to work with them? And how is them praying to Allah any different from Christians kneeling down to receive Jesus in the face?
What he is describing is Islamism, and his description of it is entirely correct.
Of course it does, I originally heard the word in a book from a former member of Hizb ut-Tahrir, who is still a Muslim, and his use of the word is to describe those who use extremist Islam as a political ideology, while ignoring the basic teachings of the faith, so unless he hated himself and his own religion I doubt he'd use the term.
I have a problem with Islam as much as the next guy, but a political ideology - such as Christianity or Islam - doesn't really make you literally stink.

Ehh, no. It was the French who started using it 200 years ago. It was the French who started using it again from the 70's/80's. It was used by fundies talking about other fundies but becasue they couldnt let those fundies be shown as they themselves were, they called them Islamists instead. Its quite possible that some Muslims from the extreme end of the spectrum have picked it up as a badge of honor, much like the right wing nutjobs took the "Right Wing terrorist" report up as a badge of honor.
