And where do criminals get their guns? They can't buy them legally. They get them from what is known as the secondary or market which gets the guns it sells from people who steal them from legal gun owners. If you eliminate guns, then no one will have guns because even the supply for criminals will dry up.
Then you make any crime committed using a gun, including possession, punishable by a REALLY big sentence so it becomes just not worth the extra risk. Most forms of street crime don't really require guns.

Fully automatic machine guns and rocket launchers are illegal, yet I don't see criminals running around with those. "Criminals will always get guns" only works if you constantly have gun shops open everywhere, not to mention unregulated gun shows. And background checks are a joke because they can just convince someone else to go buy a gun for them, or they could just buy from an individual at a gun show or elsewhere. If we had tighter restrictions on gun ownership and purchases, you'd be amazed at how fast the gun violence rate would drop.
1)How exactly are you going to use your guns to stop the government? The military has drones now and a $2000 gun that is more effective than your shotgun or AK-15.
2) the Native Americans had guns too. And the Dynamics was different, considering Americans back then wanted their land and weren't hung up on keeping their side of the contracts.
