Extortion and blackmail?
I gave away four chocolate biscuits to the kids brave enough to come into our neighbourhood. It happens to be a trouble spot, and in Northern Ireland 'trouble' means 'oh shit put the mattress against the windows, quick!'
Nobody would egg a house in our area for fear of getting a brick in return. But you're not worried about stranger danger, rough neighbourhoods, fireworks wielded by hoodie-wearing morons, spiked sweets or - hell - even cavities.
You're scared of the devil.

No, vandalism is condemned as criminal all of the year. It doesn't happen in my neighborhood. Maybe you just live among assholes. Give up sweeping the floor at the fish and chips shop, get a better job and move someplace where they don't do that kind of stuff. Otherwise, quit bitching. You belong with assholes.
-I was a good neighbor.We had a great Halloween party in honor of our 25th weddding anniversary and invited all my neighbors and friends. Everyone came as a "dead couple". And I meant dead, with blood and wounds. We had a blast.
-Two couples were in the 60's and were the life of the party. One came as Marilyn Monroe and Joe DiMaggio, the other came as Lucy and Ricky. They didn't seem frightened.
-if you are miserable enough not to give out candy once a year to kids and enjoy it, then you deserve a little TP in your trees.
-At least the Devil knows how to have some fun.
I think Vale of Belvoir benefice has gotten tired of shouting at kids to get off his lawn and confiscating toys that accidentally fall on his property, and now just vents about, "those damn hooligans/punk kids" online.
I have always found Halloween a bit silly, I guess because it just isn't as strong a tradition where where I live as it is in the US. The idea of getting kids to wander the neighbourhood in strange costumes at night accepting candy from strangers, well its a bit wierd. Still, the vast majority of it is just harmless fun and as long as the wishes of those who don't want to be involved are respected, I don't see a huge problem with it.

Except that the whole "trick" (extortion) part doesn't really happen. If you're not home or if you leave the lights off in front of the house and don't open the door, the kids just move on to the next house. Unless, maybe, of course, you've got some real enemies in your neighborhood, which doesn't seem all that far-fetched in your case.
If you're elderly and afraid of a bunch of kids trick or treating, you should be in a home. The meter man might be out to get you, and he's grown up.
As for the property damage, quit handing out Chick Tracts and that will clear right up. I've never even had a pumpkin smashed, but then again I make sure to hand out the good stuff. (1 chocolate bar, 1 skittles, 2 rockets)
I wonder what kind of areas these fundies live in where they are constantly afriad of kids vandalizing(sp?) their house?
We were the only house on our block to give out candy and none of our neighbors homes were TP'ed.

Now, a little about Halloween. It's an old pagan (Celtic) Feast, just like Easter and Christmas. So stop celebrating one, stop celebrating all is the logic of the case.
BTW, Halloween in its homelands is called Samhain (not Sam Hane! It's Saa-win), and it has nothing to do with witches or Christian devils. It was the end of summer when the harvest had to be completed before the long northern nights/short days set in. It was a time when the veil between the two worlds was considered to be at its thinnest, so that there might be passage between the two. But most of all, it was a time when the countryside became dormant and looked forward to the next spring. So how come America fucked it up? Probably commercialism.
That's odd, because trick-or-treaters where I live a) don't come to your house unless you're advertising your Halloween-participation in some way like putting pumpkins in your window, b) don't vandalise anyone's property, and c) are in quite a number of cases less than five years old.
Um, am I really the only one left in the world who gets this anymore? the dick is right. that's the whole point. that's why it's so fun.
I'm getting so pissed this year that no one remembers that "trick or treat" is meant to be very literal.

You can get off that shit right now, while vandalism increases a little it's Christmas, New years and Thanksgiving that increases fatalities and injury at a higher than normal rate.
Even when you remove traffic incidents and suicide spikes. Getting extended family together causes much more misery than Halloween.
