The idea that even one’s most intimate, hidden and personal thoughts will be held accountable to the God of the Bible is abhorrent to our culture. Even Christians have become embarrassed to state such an idea openly.
The modern attempt is to put God and his Bible in an intellectual box and then label that box bigotry and intolerance. Surely we can do what we want with our bodies, our unborn children and our thoughts.
The spirit of the people of Babel lives on with great passion!
Then they said, “Come, let’s build a great city for ourselves with a tower that reaches into the sky. This will make us famous and keep us from being scattered all over the world.” Genesis 11:4
Man’s spirit has not changed much over time.
Now our culture has once again become fascinated with itself. The trauma and tragedy of the two great wars of the 20th century has faded into a dull memory. Culturally, politically we think that we know what is best for our lives without regard for God. We have become like Israel in the time of the Judges. We do what is right in our own eyes: to each his own.
May God renew our passion for spreading the Gospel of Jesus Christ! This is only hope for your children.

The only thing that's gonna save humanity is humans acting humanely. Humans acting like drooling cultists all the time will eventually destroy humanity. Of course, you could probably argue that all species become extinct anyway, even though future forms will still be our descendants.

1. The name of Babel is still famous around the world, so God’s first objective has failed quite badly.
2. They built the Tower to keep them “from being scattered all over the world”, exactly what happened after God destroyed it. What a coincidence! No wait, it’s just sloppy storytelling. How was the tower even supposed to accomplish that?

Are you implying that the two World Wars were your God’s doing? You realize that this would make him a monster of, well, monstrous proportions, don’t you?

We don't label all followers of God as bigots and intolerant. Just the ones who want to force everyone else to believe what they do and hate those who don't.

By whom? There is much that is tolerant and unbigoted in the Bible. It's just that you prefer the bigoted bits.
"This will make us famous and keep us from being scattered all over the world.” Genesis 11:4 "
One of many reasons why the Babel myth is ridiculous. If this group of people included everybody, then they were already famous if they knew of themselves. And what's so bad about not wanting to be split up? Sectarian nationalism hasn't exactly been a blessing to humanity.

Sorry but no. We didn't put him in there. He clambered in there of his own accord and declared it his box fort. No girls allowed (as usual).

How convenient that you leave out the part afterward where your god is pissing himself with fear of what we mere mortals may be capable of accomplishing if he doesn't actively and purposefully impede our development.
“Come, let’s build a great city for ourselves with a tower that reaches into the sky.
And God was too stupid to know that a tower made of mud bricks and tar (they had brick for stone, and slime had they for mortar - Gen. 11:3) couldn't reach more than a few dozen feet? Besides, the pyramids had already been built far above anything you could build with bricks and tar by the time Genesis was written. And how come He didn't stop the building of the Burj Khalifa - does He like Muslims better?

While the antique fundie attempt is to be bigoted and intolerant and say "It's OK because god said to do it.".
I keep that "bigotry and intolerance" box handy just for posts like this one, written by someone who is indeed fascinated with himself. And you come near my kids, I'm calling the cops.
BTW, are you that "Jay" who trolls the Disqus sites so relentlessly and monotonously?
4 And they said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city, and a tower whose top is in the heavens; let us make a name for ourselves, lest we be scattered abroad over the face of the whole earth.”
5 But the Lord came down to see the city and the tower which the sons of men had built.
6 And the Lord said, “Indeed the people are one and they all have one language, and this is what they begin to do; now nothing that they propose to do will be withheld from them.
7 Come, let Us go down and there confuse their language, that they may not understand one another’s speech.”
8 So the Lord scattered them abroad from there over the face of all the earth, and they ceased building the city.
9 Therefore its name is called Babel, because there the Lord confused the language of all the earth; and from there the Lord scattered them abroad over the face of all the earth.
Genesis 11:49
Dick!
Actually we're putting our take on the god of the bible in the box labeled intolerance. See, most gods are made in mans' image. Isn't it awful convenient how your god's opinions are shared by the early church leaders?
Or when some people disagree with those opinions, suddenly, god had their opinions the whole time?
... one's most intimate, hidden and personal thoughts ...
What have you been up to, Jay?

No, we don't call that bigotry and intolerance. Only your version of it.

If the shoe fits...
"Surely we can do what we want with our bodies, our unborn children and our thoughts."
Note the word "ours," they were given to us, and once given means they aren't God's anymore. And if he's omnipotent, he can just take it back anytime he pleases, and there's nothing anyone could do to stop him, and yet he does nothing, and yet you pretend that he can get offended by it.
Confused?
