What's wrong with these Russian leaders, indeed? Putin (or, as we "affectionately" call him in Europe, Putler or Stalin JR) is one of the most eager warmongering megalomaniacs that have ruled in this century. He's also a homophobe and actively support quite a few dictators; al-Assad in Syria for example.

Putin (let’s face it, if you say Russia“ you just mean him) agrees with you on exactly one issue, homophobia.
Abortion is legal in Russia. There is universal, free healthcare for everyone. There is a significant number of Muslims. There was even a story not so long ago that Putin bend the rules to allow one of his Muslim allies to have multiple wives.
Why are you people never talking about that when you are gushing about how wonderful Russia is?
So this "lack of leadership" involves:
* Not going hard enough after Daesh, though Putin's intervention in Syria has hardly touched it
* Concluding a deal with the Islamic Republic of Iran, when Putin's relationship with Iran is far better than any the US has had since the fall of the Shah - Iran is a candidate member of the CSTO, Putin's rival to NATO
* Not being pro-life, when Russia has the world's highest abortion rate per woman of childbearing age
* Not being tough on Muslims, when there are parts of Russia - namely in Dagestan - which are effectively run by jihadists
* Not seeing being a friend of Israel in terms of just being a friend of Bibi, when Russia has armed and trained Israel's mortal enemies
All you've got left is hatred of gays, isn't it?
Take out the random Russophilia that seems to be so common on the Internet these days and this seems pretty reasonable.

Russia doesn't want to be our ally. Putin wants to put the Soviet Union back together, just without all that Marxist/Leninist crap. The US is his "Oceania" to the US's "Eurasia" (cf. 1984) - a phony "enemy" to keep the Russian people patriotic and afraid of attack.
