[Regarding a Left Behind remake]
I find it sad and kind of disturbing that Cloud Ten Pictures, who have traditionally been known for making "spiritual" if not fully outright Christian films has 1) decided to reboot a perfectly fine trilogy and 2) made really suspect casting choices, if the rumors are to be believed. I find it hard to believe that the moral and ethical integrity, as well as the doctrinally sound principles portrayed in the books, and to a lesser extent the original movies, will be preserved when you have such a notorious "Hollywood type" in the main role. I don't dispute Nic Cage's acting ability, I absolutely love his performance in the National Treasure movies. What I dispute is his moral standpoint, and his willingness to portray a character that in his original state in the books is a 100% committed and conservative Christian, who is willing to die for his faith. That sounds like the exact opposite of how Nic Cage would live his life. I think that something is going to have to give somewhere, either in the Lalonde brothers' script, or in Nic Cage. I hope the latter, because the books have a message that the world needs to hear. For right now, I'm hoping that this is all just rumor, and it's not real, but if it is, I pray that God will bestow wisdom upon the Lalonde brothers, and help them to be a good and positive witness for Christ to these lost souls that they have cast in their movie.

Let me guess, this guy wants it to star Kirk Cameron or some other fundie movie 'star'. Though I do agree with the thought of why are they rebooting the trilogy, but that's more based off of thinking being subjected to it once was more than enough.
Nicolas Cage is starring in a FUCKING LEFT BEHIND MOVIE?!?!?! Oh, how the mighty have fallen...
If this thing develops the same reputation that The Wicker Man remake has, I'm totally watching it.
Given the hateful, bigoted, starve-the-poor ideology of most of the people who now call themselves "conservative Christians" and the fact that the majority of "Hollywood types" champion the side that represents many of the values that Jesus actually taught, it couldn't be any less likely that one of them would be a "good and positive witness for Christ" than anyone you'd pick.
It's why 'Christian Films' are doomed low box office and to end in the bargain bins early, Especially movies from the Rapture sects. The movies are stupid enough but the insistance on hiring "Godly people" leaves you with badly acted movies as well.
The last decent Christian project was Davey and Goliath claymation. Acting was better than Left Behind too.
The Left Behind movies (on YouTube) I think are more Kirk Cameron charity vehicles,(like Christian bands that can exist only in a closed self-censored market) because he didn't leave Hollywood because it's corrupt like he claims, Hollywood told him to get lost because he sucks.
So I guess this officially puts Nicolas Cage in the washed-up-will-do-any-shitty-acting-job-he-can-get-his-hands-on category? Damn, I used to love the guy, though he'll always be Randy from Valley Girl to me.
I've learned long ago that actors and filmmakers are just like anyone else-at the end of the day it's all about the paycheck.
Actors need to be able to play a verify of roles, to not let their personal life effect a role. Cage might not be the best actor but he's not the type who will change a role to fit him.
As for rebooting it with Cage, the answer is simple, they want more people to see it in hopes they will be converted and hope that Cafe's star power will help.
And I think Ben Affleck as Batman sucks. What of it? Acting is just that, dear, acting. I don't expect Ian McKellen to be an abominable tyrant, despite having seen him as Richard, I don't think that Jurgen Prochnow could lead a torpedo attack, even though "Das Boot" is one of my favourite movies, I don't believe Beat Takeshi is a sword-wielding madman (OK, I do think he's crazy, but that's not the point).
Besides, if that movie turns out to be barely watchable, this will be a major evidence towards the existence of God. Nic Cage or no Nic Cage, the source material is worth exactly squat and is one of the worst books I've had the displeasure of reading.
I have a friend who is a fan of Nic Cage, and his opinion is that he always picks movies he won't have to take fully seriously. If he's right, then accepting such a role is something he would happily do.
"doctrinally sound principles"? That sounds a bit like an oxymoron.
Jesus himself, according to the Bible, was a Liberal, or even a Socialist, using today's standards. He would probably not approve of the way the Conservatives treat "the least of his people" in America.
Nicolas Cage is an actor, dearie. That means portraying people other than yourself on the stage or on screen. He was raised in a Catholic family and he will probably be able to portray a Christian on screen. He's donated millions to charity, among others Amnesty International, which Jesus would probably approve of.
What a coincidence. I was just reading about those movies this week.
@Mikgof
I'm shocked! They made a Left Behind movie?
Yes, and not only one, but THREE of them. This reboot can be seen as fourth one.
I believe the stated purpose for doing the remake was to make it follow the book more closely. I, for one, sincerely hope that they do that. It would make this movie pure comedy gold, beyond even something like Plan 9 from Outer Space.
My theory is that Nic Cage likes to challenge himself to see just how hammy he can be and continually tries to top himself with every film (Ghost Rider 2 in particular is a masterpiece of B-movie cheese). With that in mind, this would seem like the perfect project for him because the source material is so thoroughly ridiculous, he can be as crazy as he wants and the director likely won't catch on to what he's doing.
I'm pretty sure that Nicholas Cage is doing this for money, & money only. I've read more than once that he's saddled with massive tax problems due to overspending.
This can't possibly be any worse than Battlefield Earth & in some perverse way, I'm kinda looking forward to it. It's fortunate that I have a high tolerance for cinematic pain-I own The Room, for Cthulhu's sake. And speaking of Battlefield Earth-I will give Tom Cruise credit for avoiding that one like the plague. He may be out of his skull, but he's not as stupid as John Travolta clearly is. Aged much better too.
I don't dispute Nic Cage's acting ability
Nicolas Cage has acting ability? Oh, you mean his ability to make some people think he's an actor.

No, he can't even do that. However, he's excellent at spending too much money.
I actually didn't mind the Left Behind books so much. They were certainly better fiction than Twilight, if a little poor on character depth and development. Who knows, maybe if the characters are allowed to be a little less 2D in this movie, it could be worth watching, if only just for the comedic factor.
Edit: @rubber chicken I think you have him confused with Kristen Stewart.
@Hasan Prishtina
I expect this guy's ideal cast would be even worse than Battlefield Earth. At least Travolta has acting experience.
@Rageaholic
It's too bad Nicholas Cage Month on TGWTG ended a couple of weeks ago. Maybe he'll do a part 2 at some point. Not like Nic Cage hasn't been in enough gawd-awful movies to make more than one. Another Left Behind movie sounds like a shoe-in!
@Kisare
The thing that annoys me most about the Left Behind books is it could actually be a pretty interesting and entertaining post-apocalyptic theme if it were handled better and didn't have all the fundie religious baggage.
Fred Clark has a good takedown of the Left Behind movies (as well as the books) at his Slacktivist blog. Especially their less-than-epic production values: "Global Community One," Nicolae's plane, is bigger than a 747 in the books, but is played by a Piper-sized bugsmasher in the movies. Clark also pointed out a sign in one scene that was supposedly in Hebrew, but actually in English written with Hebrew letters (and not even right-to-left).
Actually one of the biggest problems with Christian movies is their refusal to potray Christians as anything but calm, happy, secure and confident smily people. When in fact their loud, twitchy, foaming at the mouth scared little rabbits more often, Nic can do that lost to emotions and losing it guy.
THERE'S A REMAKE?! OH GOOD GRAVY!!
Also, Nicholas Cage will star in anything because of both "money, dear boy" and a great love for acting. He'll jump in, ham it up & provide more fodder for internet memes & viral videos for years to come!

...Why, yes I do! Heck, a big Hollywood actor (even one who's seen better days & morphs into a delicacy from the Smithfield smokehouses to do it) would make good business sense.
Look, OP, Cameron may still be nice on the eyes but he's a zillion-times more washed up & is only known for a dorky 80's sitcom and one gender-flipped "Freaky Friday" movie remake. You may as well hire Justin Bieber.
I must admit, I like Nicolas Cage as an actor. He has shown in a few roles that he really can act, so he appeals to the “cineaste” in me. The rest of his characters though make my inner trash fan rejoice! I just hope he will deliver some good movie anytime soon, between his schlock movies. The trailer to “Joe” looks promising, at least.
Such a Left-Behind remake should make for excellent riffing material!
@rubber chicken:
I think this is the first time that I read someone saying that about the Cager. His normally goes for over-acting and scenery-chewing.
@ScrappyB:
Cage has made enough bad movies that Doug could do a month about him every year until he retires
I hope they don't follow the book more closely. The book was preachy garbage that sacrificed any entertainment value for a long, sluggish Author Tract and a dumbass bit during the middle where Buck goes around using two different fake names (George Oreskovitch and Steve Plank). Also, the attack on Israel happens a year before the Rapture and nothing else happens in the intervening time .
BREAKING NEWS: The longtime No. 1 pretrib rapture teacher, Dr. John Walvoord of Dallas Seminary, believed that the "Left Behind" books and movies have a NON-BIBLICAL foundation! If you doubt this, Google "The 'Left Behind' Rupture" which was aired on Joe Ortiz's "The End Times Passover" blog on August 12, 2014. (For more shocks Google "Pretrib Rapture Dishonesty," "Pretrib Rapture Pride," and "Pretrib Rapture Stealth.")
