I thought at 9/11 what happened was God’s protective hand was removed and we felt what pure evil is like. We felt that this last week. That was pure evil, it’s the devil who has come to steal, kill and destroy. He’d just as soon kill a baby or a child in the womb as anything else. God allows that moment, we’re pressing the issue by turning from him, but he allows that moment to bring us to our senses and say, ‘God we desperately need you.’ So really it’s gracious. The pain that comes, the judgment that has really come by our turning away from the Lord is a merciful thing that God does to bring us to our senses and bring us back to him.

We look at what has happened recently here in the [Sandy Hook] school shooting and the so many things that have happened in the past few years. If we put all of those in biblical context and surround it with the Scripture we would come to different conclusions about what was happening. I was thinking the other day that God has instituted pain in our body, you know when you get a rusty nail that goes up to the sole of your foot that’s a real good thing that you feel pain because it causes you to make an adjustment. God’s judgment is like that. It’s a loving God saying to us when judgment comes to a nation it is God saying, wake up, you have walked away from me and I have loved you and I have so much desire to protect you but when you walk away you forfeit that.

Interesting the that the bible god would smite America where most of his fundie followers are rather than Iran, China or Cuba.
Or your bible god doesn't exist.......
Or maybe, instead of trying to force people into your belief system and denying reality, you come to your senses and accept reality and let the smarter people actually do work. Also, stay the fuck out of politics.

Well, after reading the bilge you spouted, I felt like I'd just had a rusty nail driven into my head.
Uh, no, that would be like saying a husband who beats up his wife when she takes too long at the grocery store is just being brought to her senses about how much he loves her with a punch to the face. Not.
It's called "free will" in Christianity. Look it up.
"That was pure evil, it’s the devil who has come to steal, kill and destroy."
- And what do you call it when some one dies because they could not afford adequate medical coverage? God's will? They're own fault for not working hard enough? Go ahead pastor, try and give an answer that suggests you actually care about human life
The USA, while not being a “Christian Nation”, is still a nation where the majority is Christian.
Why does the Christian God not punish nations that are either predominately atheistic or have another religion altogether? You do know that all these things that you call “turning away from the Lord” are happening in other nations as well, sometime for very long times now?
Why is your God ignoring them?
"I thought at 9/11 what happened was God’s protective hand was removed and we felt what pure evil is like."
What about all those African highly Crhistian nations having to go through ugly, ultra-violent, life-destroying civil wars? Would that be just the same as two planes hitting two towers when you see your mother raped by someone, your father executed in the street and your home burned down and then to be made to fight and have sex with the men that did all that to you?
You disgust me, almost as much as terrorists and war criminals. You disgust me with your americentrism. You disgust me for the blindness for the rest of the world. But most of all, you disgust me because you had the chance to know and be better than you are and do know and you shut the door to all of that.
Fundie Beliefs #6 : The Value of Belief
God sometimes rewards belief. For example, suppose a good fundamentalist and an atheist both get their legs blown off in a war. For the believer, it’s obviously a reward: God has stepped in and saved him from death. For the atheist, it’s equally obvious that God has taken his legs as a punishment for his disbelief.
Prayer can help. For example, if you pray for a seven while shooting craps, God will sometimes give you one. But since gambling is sinful, He’ll only do it about one time out of six*.
Failure to believe can have far-reaching consequences. God hates non-believers, of course, but He often strikes godly people just for standing nearby**. Going to the same school, or living in the same town or even the same country as a non-believer can attract God’s wrath, even if you're a baby. For example, it’s well-known that U.S. soldiers even good evangelicals have died in Iraq and Afghanistan because the U.S. refuses to outlaw homosexuality***.
* Roulette apparently is even more sinful. He only makes your number come up about one time in 38 (37 on the slightly less sinful single-zero wheels).
** The blasphemous suggestion that God is nearsighted is ridiculous.
*** See, for example, the teachings of the Westboro Baptist Church.
Such a horrific tragedy to the families involved. I wonder how I can console them and profess Christ's love...
I know! I'll tell them that God watched and allowed their poor innocent children to die just to make a point to Americans.

I love how the first guy complains about the 'level of vitriol' they've gotten over these comments. People like these deserve all the vitriol they get and then some.
Violence or the threat of to sway a people or government. That is terrorism. Your god if real, killed the children. If that's true he is a terrorist. And thus not worthy of worship. If he did nothing he cares nit and thus is not worthy of worship. If he could not have he is not powerful enough. You make a horrible case for god "pastor"
Fuck you. If your god has to allow the murder of innocent 5 year olds then he is a fucking twat.
There is not one person that I have ever known or will ever know that would not have done something to prevent that tragedy had they been able to. But your douche bag of a god could have prevented it but chose not to? Now you want others to worship that?
You are truly fucked in the head.
America certainly appears to be at the top of Gods "Countries to smite" list. Hurricanes, tornadoes, mass shootings. Oh well look on the bright side while he's smiting America he isn't smiting anyone else.
Although when it came to killing those children why didn't he send a bear like he did in the Bible. I mean if a bear walked into a school and killed 20 kids you would think there certainly was a God.
As it is a nut with a gun doesn't convince anyone.

... fade to text ... "Yaweh, still the No. 1 protection racket on the planet." ... fade to black ...
Pastor Bill: I was thinking the other day that God has instituted pain in our body, you know when you get a rusty nail that goes up to the sole of your foot that’s a real good thing that you feel pain because it causes you to make an adjustment. God’s judgment is like that. It’s a loving God saying to us when judgment comes to a nation it is God saying, wake up, you have walked away from me and I have loved you and I have so much desire to protect you but when you walk away you forfeit that.
Pastor Bill, you didn't really think this through, now did you? It's hard to do any walking when you have that loving Christian nail in your foot and that God-created tetanus is coursing through your body.
The people orchestrating 9/11 were governed by the same god as you are; the Abrahamic God. If what they did was pure evil, then that is what your god is.
I guess God is fairly OK with the way we Swedes treat him, then. The Norwegians; not so much.
he allows that moment to bring us to our senses and say, God we desperately need you.’
How will being shot dead with an assault rifle bring a six year old to his senses? Nothing has created more atheists than senseless tragedy. Several well-known enlightenment philosophers cited the great Lisbon earthquake, which destroyed every church in Lisbon in the middle of the All Saints Day celebration in 1755 as a turning point in their belief in a benevolent God. Goethe wrote "By treating the just and the unjust in the same way, God had not behaved in the fatherly manner that I had been attributing to him in my catechism". Voltaire wrote "And can you then impute a sinful deed/ To babes who on their mothers’ bosoms bleed?/ Was then more vice in fallen Lisbon found,/ Than Paris, where voluptuous joys abound?"
The "wake up call" idea actually has the opposite effect. You'd think God would know that, unless He's as dumb as Pastor Bill.
God is like the parent who would place rusty nails all around, on purpose , so the kids will step on them. And if the kids step on them, he will punish the kids by tossing them into the fireplace.
No thank you.
So, God allows Satan to kick the sh*t out of his special creations, those created in his very image, because the omniscient God thinks we might turn back to him? Oh, that IS good thinking, Bill.
How about if your God just made himself obvious to everyone and did something both good and grand? Yeah, I didn't think so.
"It’s a loving God saying to us when judgment comes to a nation it is God saying, wake up, you have walked away from me and I have loved you and I have so much desire to protect you but when you walk away you forfeit that."

Pastor Bill's God.
"If we put all of those in biblical context and surround it with the Scripture we would come to different conclusions about what was happening."
Yeah, and if we put it in Magic: The Gathering context we can come to the conclusion that these shooters were Phyrexian sleeper angents preparing for a full planar assult. Makes just as much sense as your fantasy.
By consistently refusing to address real-world issues, by refusing to explore realistic solutions to real problems, asshats such as Pastor Bill Elliff firmly cement themselves in position as part of the problem, not the solution.
If we put all of those in biblical context and surround it with the Scripture we would come to different conclusions about what was happening.
And thereby drive even more people away from Christianity. Your god sounds like pure evil: "Worship me or I'll kill your children."
I wouldn't compare your god's love to a rusty nail slightly inserted via your own pressure into the sole of your foot. It's more like a pitchfork; a rusty, pronged, acid covered, twisted instrument inserted violently in the guts by a large and angry redneck then turned repeatedly and with great force until the contents of your abdomen resemble a well-scrambled egg.
Is it just me or does the hand of god seem to remove itself from the USA at an alarming rate, considering they are probably the most nauseatingly pious Western nation?
We have no abortion law in Canada (none) and we've had same sex marriage (with laws protecting them from discrimination) for over seven years. When are we going to get smacked?
Oh, yeah, we have a much higher level of rational, I mean, non-religious people.
"God allows that moment, we’re pressing the issue by turning from him, but he allows that moment to bring us to our senses"
How about just giving everyone a personal talk at the same time, since he is all powerful.
I can think of many ways an omnipotent being could bring its creations to their senses without subjecting them to tremendous amounts of pain and torture.
And how come so many terrible disasters happen in the bible belt?
If your god actually did exist he would be a detestable SOB.
Yes, he loves us so much that he kills members of our own just to show how much he truly loves us.
So, what you're saying it that your God is an abusive boyfriend?
Confused?
