"I think even when life begins in that horrible situation of rape, that it is something that God intended to happen," Mourdock said during Tuesday's Senate debate, choking up. Mourdock's opponent, Democratic Rep. Joe Donnelly, opposes abortion except in cases of rape and incest.
After the debate, Mourdock further explained his comment.
"Are you trying to suggest somehow that God preordained rape, no I don't think that," said Mourdock, according to The Associated Press. "Anyone who would suggest that is just sick and twisted. No, that's not even close to what I said.

Technically he wasn't saying that God preordains rape.
No. He was saying that God makes babies magically happen... and that in cases of rape pregnancy... God doesn't care that the woman was raped and decides to burden the woman with their rapist's child.
Either way, makes god look pretty bad.

I'm not suggesting anything , Ricky-boy. But your electorate did, when they voted in Democrat Joe Donnelly instead of you .
Suggestion: Try being Politically Correct in future. Sure, it might stick in your craw, and create irreconcilable differences with your so-called 'principles' you've supposedly 'reconciled' yourself to, but it'll ensure you stick to your current job in the future.
In these currently fragile financial conditions, one cant afford to be 'Proud'. 'Pride' and right-wing fundie 'Principles' don't pay the rent/mortgage, the bills, put food on the table, etc.
Moral:
'I don't do diplomacy'

You're such losses to the diplomatic corps, right-wingers [/hyper-sarcasm]
"No, that's not even close to what I said."
Yes, that's exactly what you said.
Fair point - he didn't say God intended the rape, but that God intended the life that came of it. Twisting words to suit your prejudices is a fundie trait. Please don't descend to their level - it might be fun, but people will eventually notice and judge you in the same way we judge them.
Where would the pregnancy come from if there is no rape? Would god magically poof it into existence - it being his plan and all?
And since we're magically poofing things into existence - would god skip the pregnancy and poof a full term baby onto your sofa?
Mourdocks problem is compartmentalised cognition. He thinks about abortion and gods plan in one part of his brain, while another part of his brain thinks rape is bad - and these 2 parts of his brain don't talk to each other until someone calls him on his nonsense.
If God is supposedly omnipotent (all-powerful) and omniscient (all-knowing), you can't get away with saying that he gets credit for good things but no responsibility for bad things. If God decides a woman is supposed to have a baby, why does she have to be raped to do it? Mary didn't. (Of course, God didn't exactly ask her, either ...)
A pregnancy doesn't make a rape all better. That's like saying cream cheese frosting makes turds taste like chocolate.
Murdock deserved to lose because he's a misogynistic asshole. It's nice that voters agreed with me.
Hang on, doesn't a woman's body have ways of shutting down during 'legitimate' rape to prevent pregnancy?
It sounds crazy, but I think somebody may not be telling the truth here.
Dude? That is EXACTLY what you said! That said, I only support abortion if having the child will kill the mother...don't punish the child for who his/her parents are. Disclaimer: That is only my opinion, you have the right to yours.
What concerns me the most here is that the debate over abortion seems to have evolved to the point where the only question being debated in the public sphere is whether or not women can have abortions in the case of incest or rape. It is almost as if it has been decided that women can not simply have abortions on demand as is their right according to Roe v Wade. We "liberals" need to be careful about this. The whole argument has shifted so far to the right.
Making abortion on demand, for ANY reason, illegal would be catastrophic to our country.
I hate these people for making me so vindictive.
Whenever I see these ignorant misogynistic comments about forcing women to have their rapists babies, it makes me think that they should be raped and be made to keep the baby, just to see how much they cling to their precious "pro-life" principles then.
I know I shouldn't wish rape on people, and normally I wouldn't dream of it, but then I read something like this, and it makes me so angry.

Self-contradiction much? In order for a woman getting pregnant to be god's will, that would mean that the act that got the woman pregnant in the first place would be god's will. In this case, rape. And I have to agree with the statement, "Anyone who would suggest that is just sick and twisted." That is a perfect description of you.
"I think ... that it is something that God intended to happen."
There's your problem, you presumptuous, delusional ass!
"Are you trying to suggest somehow that God preordained rape?"
No, he just means that God took advantage of the situation to wave his magic penis and spooge a soul into the poor woman's womb. Obviously, rape was not punishment enough for the "sin" of being born a woman. She must have done something to "deserve" it or God wouldn't have let it happen, right? Right? That's how things work in the real world - if you're a bad person, a safe falls on your head or something. /rant
What's the difference between Richard Mourdock's brain and a bowl of oatmeal? No, really.
It is really interesting how confused people can get about this. Someone jumped to the conclusion that Mourdock was saying God preordained rape...
He didn't. Instead, he mentioned something about how all life comes into being by God's will. Basically, failing biology.
That isn't the same as pre-ordination. It means God doesn't care that a woman has been raped, and is going to saddle her with the child of her rapist... shows how his views of religion think of women.
@ JohnTheAtheist:
THANK YOU.
So the omnipotent, omniscient, omni-benevolent God can't find a better way to create a life than to have a woman raped? And yet you worship this deity?
And, YES, that is what you said.

Maybe these “rape experts” in the GOP should get together and get their stories straight. Sorry, of course I meant “legitimate rape experts”.
Dick here at least has now time for it
That IS exactly what you said. "it is something that God intended to happen". That means that God intends rape to happen. Knowing that evil will happen, and intending it to happen, and causing it to happen.
"Are you trying to suggest somehow that God preordained rape, no I don't think that," said Mourdock
But that is what your bible teaches. If your god is omniscient like you claim, then he is aware of absolutely everything that is going to happen from the now until the end of time (or whatever). This means every rape, every murder, every harmful deed is foreseen by your god. And he allows it to happen.
This is exactly why Richard Mourdock lost.
@ #1475682:
Yes, it's true, Donnelly isn't that much better.
Mourdock; imagine that your daughter, your wife, your mother or your sister is raped. Would you say the same things to any of them as you are saying now? No, no, you don't have to tell US, we know that you are saying that to sound consistent. Tell YOURSELF, honestly and truthfully, that you would tell your mother that her pregnancy, started during a rape, is God's will, that you are going to welcome your new sibling with open arms and a heart full of love.
It's not as easy when it comes that close, is it, dearie? That is why many women are pro-choice; we can all imagine it happening to us.
@Warren McIntosh: The words that allegedly got twisted are still reprehensible. Complaining about what he actually said isn't twisting his words, nor is it stooping to his level. In any case, being nice to bigots and trying not to stoop to "their" level (so low worms can step on it) doesn't get you anywhere.
His original words were shitty enough. We don't even NEED to twist them, just report them.
So, God intended it to happen, as you quoted before, YES OR NOT?. Please, get clear.
It can't happen to Ricky, so no one should care about those it does happen to. He certainly doesn't.
Why do I get the feeling that if it happened to one of his female relatives, he would whisk her off for an abortion faster than you could say "slimy hypocrite"?
Confused?
