I live in Vermont. Which, as states go, is actually pretty decent. Yet despite this, at least half the people I encounter are highly religious idiots. Maybe I've just got terrible luck when it comes to meeting people.
I know there are a lot of decent intelligent Americans, I also know there are a lot of people who fall on the right side of issues for the wrong reasons, but I really can't see how anyone who watches more than five minutes of news a day could think this country is dominated by sane rationalists. You can't believe that you and I and the others who come here represent the average American.
In any case, I really didn't want to get sucked in to a fight about whether Rizzo is right or wrong. We may disagree there (though probably not to the extent you think), but that was never really my point. I acknowledged his generalizations right away, I've said I can see why people think he's being rude, and I'm sure some of his posts have been more offensive than this one here. All I wanted was for people to reign in their tempers a little bit.
You say yourself you think Rizzo is trolling, so I'll say it again: Whatever happened to "don't feed the trolls"? I'm afraid I just don't see the point of responses like "Fuck off and STFU". It isn't funny, nor does it help solve the problem. I expect better from the normally intelligent people here, and I don't see why a little maturity is too much to ask.
I'd also like to say that I don't have anything personally against Bollox. Normally I find him as funny as the other regular posters here. That doesn't mean I have to take kindly to being called a "humourless cunt" just because I suggested a more reasoned reaction might be in order.
In the end, I've made my point. This is the internet and I'm not going to get through to anybody. Nobody has really refuted my actual point, they've just turned this into "with us or against us", and that was never what I was trying to do. If people prefer infighting, then fine. I'm really starting to sound like a broken record here anyway.
