Now, off topic. How did food happen to evolve at the same time man did? And, why doesn't food change, after these millions of years to something not food so it won't get destroyed every day by hungry people and animals? Natural selection doesn't seem to handle that too well.

Umm... it has... a simple, common example would be bovines. Go have a gander.

9/6/2011 3:41:36 AM

Well, it was rather simple. Most common animals hunted by old-as-fuck, or more fossilized than Palin's vagina, animals handled this through faster reproduction and growth cycle, even more so in terms of plants, edible fruit. You know FUCKLOADS OF EDIBLE BITS AND PIECES THAT WE HAVE LANDFILL WORTHS OF.

Fucking idiot.

Here is a crazy thought. Plants existed before man and man found some plants that tasted good. The seeds went undigested and were passed in hu-manure. Naturally these plants had a leg up in that whole survival thing. No wait, that can't be it. That makes sense.

Umm, I change food to "something not food" every single day.

Perhaps you should see your physician as soon as possible.

9/6/2011 3:56:00 AM

Possibly because the vast majority of what we eat is domesticated and therefore we control its evolution to make sure it remains edible?

And things DO evolve into "not-food". That's why poison and thorns exist. Their predators then evolve a way around it, so then the prey has to evolve more to compensate. Unfortunately, since "food" is necessarily "organic", evolving into "not-food" would essentially mean ceasing to exist as a living thing, which is not exactly an evolutionary strong-point.

Xander: How? What? How?

Giles: Three excellent questions.

The hell? Is 'food' one unchanging thing of supreme blandness now? Don't invite me to dinner, kthx.

9/6/2011 4:15:48 AM

Surely, hamburgers should have evolved some kind of defense mechanism or ability to flee when McDonald's alone has sold billions of them.

9/6/2011 4:20:29 AM

Apparently, someone doesn't understand how plants reproduce.

9/6/2011 4:30:11 AM

Easy. Being eaten helps transport the seeds. The fruits are SUPPOSED to be eaten.

Twinkies evolved from ring dings, and the pinapple was intelligently designed by Satan in response to the bananna.

Meanwhile Raycomfortfood seems to have not gotten enough food during early childhood and it affected his brain development.

Wow that is a whole bunch of stupid. Go look up some facts man, look in some books do some learning. Some plants evolved to use being eaten as a method of reproduction and plants came before man. (Hint dinosaurs also came before man and they ate things too) Some vegetables have a bitter taste at times, that is part of the plants defence stratagem, it tastes bad so animals avoid it.

And animals, well they try pretty damn hard not to be on the table. Go kill a wild animal with your bare hands, doesn't work out to well huh. Humans evolved brains till we got to the point that we had tools not much animals can do against that...but then for a kicker we evolved some more and got smart enough to tame the animals then eat the nice easy non running away variety.

You know nothing about evolution or the world outside of the comfort zone some humans live in, get out there and see the real world and learn some stuff.

There is stupid.

Then there is super-stupid.

Then there is a level to which many aspire but few have managed to attain. It is a level that cannot even be named. answersNOW has reached that level, and may have possibly constructed a wall which will make it exceedingly difficult for others to climb over.

9/6/2011 4:52:30 AM

Being bred in a safe, controlled environment to reproduce and be eaten by humans works perfectly for domesticated animals, which vastly outnumber humans (there being 15 billion of chicken alone). You were saying?

9/6/2011 4:53:24 AM

Here's an idea: organisms have been eating other organisms for food since life consisted of bacterial slime coating rocks in a thermal vent. Any species of life that gets eaten tries to find ways to avoid being eaten for as long as possible, while any species of life that eats other living things tries to find ways to keep eating.

Your strawman has no brain.

How can anyone be this stupid?

How did food happen to evolve at the same time man did?

"It didn't. Food is a man-made word for nutricious stuff, humans can eat with no harmful effects."

"And, why doesn't food change, after these millions of years to something not food so it won't get destroyed every day by hungry people and animals?"

Organisms chance. Food is a man-made synonym for 'edible'. I'm sure different creeds and different times have placed different content under this header.

Sidenote: Some of you kids seem to imply that nature is intentional, for instance Watergirl 909: "The fruits are SUPPOSED to be eaten".

Really? I'd say Darwinism and agnosticism would teach you instead, that most fruit can FORTUITOUSLY be eaten by humans without harming us.

As far as I know, the whole crux of the argument is MUTATION: things happen - some prove evolutionary fortuitous, hence they become dominant.

The rest is speculation..

How did those platters of fried chicken and biscuits evolve at the same rate as humans? It's impossible!

9/6/2011 5:31:19 AM

Wow. If you were any more stupid you'd need to be watered twice a week.

9/6/2011 5:36:21 AM

You are joking!

9/6/2011 5:47:25 AM

Doubting Thomas

Ray, you are a freaking idiot. Don't you know that many plants benefit by having their fruit be eaten by birds and other animals so that their seeds can be spread around widely? Why else do so many fruits & vegetables turn bright colors when ripe?

9/6/2011 5:58:53 AM

I actually had to read this several times before realizing that this guy isn't joking...he really is that stupid.

What. The. Fuck.

9/6/2011 6:17:47 AM

"How did food happen to evolve at the same time man did?"

This is almost as stupid as, "how did women evolve at the same time as men so that they could reproduce?"

"And, why doesn't food change, after these millions of years to something not food so it won't get destroyed every day by hungry people and animals?"

Many plants have *gasp* evolved to rely on being eaten to spread their seeds. They use the fact that they're eaten to distribute their seeds to a wider area so they actually promote animals eating them by tasting good and looking yummy.

"Natural selection doesn't seem to handle that too well."

It seems to handle it just fine. Those that couldn't adapt (as in the example above) or couldn't become inedible or simply grow faster than they were eaten aren't around any more.
