A hint to you "Earth First"-ers:
The planet was here before you arrived.
It will be here after you depart.
The Capitalist system has done more to help the environment and mankind than ANY socialist system ever has, or will. QUIT TELLING ME HOW SOME BENEVOLENT BUREAUCRAT FROM THE COMING ONE-WORLD GOVERNMENT IS GOING TO SAVE THE PLANET.
The green movement is just another useless wet-dream the socialists are trying to sell us in order to take over the world and make themselves kings. Stop beating that dead horse.

DeepWater Horizon? Exxon Valdez? Torry Canyon? Dirty Thirties? Australian Rabbits? Martin County Sludge Spill? Kingston Fossil Plant? Just about any of the industrial ones here... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_environmental_disasters#Industrial
Capitalism helping the environment?? Bull-fucking-shit!
The planet will still be here once we're gone, but what shape will it be in? Personally I'd like to leave a planet in good shape for my grandchildren's grandchildren.
And I don't really see how environmentalism is promoting any one-world government. I guess it's just like the fundies who lump everything they don't like together. Environmentalism = one world government = socialism.
Anon-e-moose, someone has stolen your name!
So this imposter Anon-e-moose seems to think that the only scientists who aren't involved in a massive socialist (or more likely, communist) conspiracy are the ones who are being paid by oil companies? If anything, it would be accurate to call the actions of the climate change denialists a conspiracy, to allow the oil companies (who provide NOTHING good for this world and serve only to INHIBIT progress) to peddle their pollution for the rest of their lives despite knowing that this would cause havoc. Complete Monsters to a man, they are. Have you noticed that they did nothing after the Deepwater Horizons spill, or, two decades earlier, the Exxon Valdeez fiasco? It is obvious that the CEOs of oil companies are all despicable sociopaths who want a stranglehold on American environmental policy.
Sorry if I'm ranting, but this is just another instance where America fails at life, at least compared to other First World (and even some Second World, fer cryin' out loud!) countries. :-(
That's funny. Capitalism has had so little effect on the environment that climate scientists use the preindustrial atmosphere as a benchmark to compare Earth's atmosphere at different times in geologic history?
Now, why would they do that?
> Capitalism has had so little effect on the environment that climate scientists use the preindustrial atmosphere as a benchmark to compare Earth's atmosphere at different times in geologic history?
Do they? How would the scientists rate modern London against, say, London of 1858 (google the episode known as "The Big Stink")?
@ Unbeliever:
Well, by 1858 the Industrial Revolution was already in full swing... I assume that modern London has significantly-cleaner air than 1858 London, though.
Though as has already been said, it is neither capitalism nor communism that caused all that pollution; that was because of industry. (Not that industrialization is bad; I'm sure that you wouldn't want to have lived in pre-Industrial times.) After all, one of the worst polluters in history was the Soviet Union.
Capitalism is utterly unconcerned with the environment. It is a system that could not give less of a shit about the environment. Meanwhile, green tech is not competitive with simply polluting. So the natural conclusion of Capitalism is to destroy the environment for profit. Individuals and governments may muck with that conclusion and force them to deviate somewhat from that line, but they're still headed that way. I have absolutely no freaking idea where he got that from. Like morality and Islam, any gains made for the environment in a capitalist system are made DESPITE the capitalist system, not because of it.
Not that I hate capitalism. It works, and it works well. I just think it needs a short leash.
@ Brendan Rizzo:

Good point. However, London before the Industrial revolution was not cleaner. As per Philip Ziegler:
"Industrial pollution and bad hygiene. But the tightly packed city would become a victim of its own success. In its expansion lay the seeds of disaster. Its infrastructure was primitive, its hygiene poor, its citizens at the mercy of foul diseases. The seething mass of people was a death trap. By the 14th century, industrial pollution was endemic. London's public services were creaking under the strain of its bloated population."
Industrial revolution had far less ecological effect then it is commonly believed. Not because the industrial plants polluted less - because through the medieval times, pollution was rather widespread. Tanneries and butcheries were among the worst offenders.

Agree on this one.
The Capitalist system has done more to help the environment and mankind than ANY socialist system ever has, or will.
That's like saying a rapist is better than a cannibal child murderer.
I'd agree that socialism is not, per se, environmentalist in of itself. I just fail to see how a system based on "accumulation for accumulation's sake, production for production's sake", ie capitalism, is.
Evidence, please?
There isn't any world State coming. That's only totally unproven, unfounded, scare-mongering, paranoid bs. Cut the crap, already! And prove me wrong if you can.
I notice you're also promoting the discredited ''socialism-is-statism'' myth. But that's the least I would expect from Propertarian clowns like yourself (even if outside the phoney ''libertarian'' right)
That aside, your entire rant is self-refuting!
Confused?
So were we! You can find all of this, and more, on Fundies Say the Darndest Things!
