I'm not necessarily completely anti-spanking, but nor am I pro-spanking. But that last sentence is incredible. You admit to hitting your children simply because you are an incompetant, impotant parent...wow.

im pro spanking to an extent
i just think it should always always be used as a last resort or when the child is doing something incredibly dangerous.

IE my sister took a knife after our babysitter when we were children
in that situation the kid is getting a spanking
but doing it just because you are to lazy to try a different punishment like time out or teach your kid that no means no then you are the one who needs to be spanked. with a leather belt impedded with nails

Spanking is never acceptable, and "a good swat" should only be used in actual emergencies with small children who are actually in danger - if your toddler keeps trying to pull down stuff you're cooking on the stovetop, for example, and you're far too shitty a parent to prevent such a situation from occurring in the first place and are reduced to scaring them away from the source of danger.

Playpen time while Liarbird cooks diner. If I turn out to be too much of a shit-tard to make that work, and it came down to catching the child in the act, then yes, I would smack the kid's hand and shout NO!
Smacking shouldn't be your plan though, it should be the absolute last resort.

Small children shouldn't be loose in the kitchen when people are cooking, anyway. How you feel about spanking doesn't factor into that.

I'm actually a lot more lenient on the whole spanking thing than I am to certain "other" aspects of fundiehood.... That said, there are certain personality types that really can't handle any kind of violence towards a lesser without the adrenaline rush turning it into a psychosexual, ritualistic power trip. And from personal observation, I'd say most fundies do fall in that category. I can't see too much good coming from fundies disciplining kids their old fashioned way.

Small children understand a lot better than you think. My brother and both my sisters raised their children just fine, rarely if ever spanking them. They mostly used distractions and removed them from the source of trouble. Yes, that sometimes meant parking them in front of the TV while cooking or ironing, but they were selective about the programming, and it counted as quiet time.

They were spoken to and read to almost from the moment the cord was cut. Children begin absorbing knowledge the moment they feel that doctor's hand on their butt, and it pisses me off that people think they don't understand anything. Those first 2-3 years are the single most important in a child's development.

What you imply here is that you're a lazy parent looking for the easy way to deal with things.

I won't debate spanking v not since I'm not a parent, so could only give a theoretical probably idealistic view.

Just while we're on the topic...

I am also of the view that a parent should never rely on the effectiveness of their discipline in protecting their children from dangerous situations. The only sure way to prevent a child from touching a hot stove or running into the street is to ensure that the opportunity for them to do so does not arise - no matter how inconvenient this may be.

I don't think that spanking is usually acceptable. I'm not a parent, but the only time I can see it being acceptable is if Little Timmy is about to run onto the highway or is getting ready to touch the hot iron.
