Quote# 52240

A RELIGIOUS sect has declared itself above Australian law and the constitution.

Members of the Kingdom of Yahweh, based in Melbourne's northern suburbs, refuse to register their vehicles, get a driver's licence or register guns.

They even manufacture their own number plates.

Victoria Police Inspector Ewan McDonald said there was a "relatively small number of people who have this peculiar view".

"They don't regard themselves subject to the laws of the state of Victoria . . . they're quite openly frank about their point of view," Insp McDonald said.

"We treat them as any other ordinary member of the public."

Insp McDonald dismissed claims members booby-trapped their number plates, but did say the plates were dangerous because they were poorly made with very sharp edges.

He said it was important to remember the group did not preach violence, did not plan to overthrow the Government and was not associated with any terrorist organisation.

"They act in their own interesting view of the world, they actually regard themselves as quite law abiding, it's just that they don't accept the sovereignty of the Parliament as you or I would," he said.

"People who express these interests and feelings have been coming to police attention for a long time, they've just proceeded as ordinary members of the public."

Facts about the Kingdom of Yahweh:

* Followers of Yahweh are disparate and not involved in one international group. In the US there are many different groups, some calling themselves either the Kingdom of Yahweh or House of Yahweh.

* It is not known when the Kingdom of Yahweh began in Australia.

Followers of Yahweh's Kingdom believe:

- Yahweh (also spelt Yahuah) is the true name of God.

- They are the keepers of the Ten Commandments and Yahweh's laws are "written on our hearts and minds".

- Yahweh's laws are more demanding than any man-made government laws, and his punishments and rewards far greater.

- They are subject only to Yahweh's holy government.

- The new world order represents all that is unholy unto Yahweh.

- Governments were made by man's hands and should therefore be opposed.

- If you carry a government identification card, it is prima-facie evidence you are a corporation and subject to the government.

- You cannot serve two masters - Yahweh and the government.

Dan Onymous

Doesn't sound particularly fundie. Louis Theroux visited a load of guys like this in America who were just right wing conspiracy theorists, not fundies.

"- Governments were made by man's hands and should therefore be opposed."

Heretics! Blasphemers! Your god clearly states, through Paul no less, that all governments are put into place by your deity. To oppose them is to oppose god himself. It explicitly states you are to follow the rules and laws of the government under which you live.

Try reading your fucking book once or twice.

Mortok

Well these ones seem fairly harmless, but it's only a matter of time.

This does sound very strange, but when you compare it to some of the other things on this site, it's not really all that crazy.

I'm actually interested to see how these people get on.

El Guapo

Huh. I didn't know that Australians had laws.

If I were a cop in Melbourne this would be like manna from heaven (apologies for the analogy there) - I could make my monthly ticket quota inside a couple of hours.

- Not displaying a valid license plate: BAM!
- No drivers license: BAM!
- No insurance (can't get insurance without drivers license): BAM! IMPOUND!

- An unregistered firearm ... Sweet FSM I hit the mother load!

ETA

@ El Guapo: That's only in football.

Doesn't sound a heck of lot different from the Amish. Just want to do their own things.

Do they pay tax?

Headache

They seems harmless until the time when you start receiving information about what? Pedophilia? Polygamy? Use of hard drugs in their Religious services? Animal sacrifices? Human sacrifices?

All of these cults starts out pretty benign but they all have a tendency to move towards the ultra extreme. When they remove themselves from the rest of the world, it is even more important to be aware and to make sure one keep an eye on what they are doing.

Laws don't apply to you anymore? Let me know how that works out for you.

11/14/2008 4:24:44 PM

ID82

Well. Lets see how they deal with prison because that's where they could go if they don't pay all of those parking tickets.

"Let every person be subject to the governing authorities; for there is no authority except from God, and those authorities that exist have been instituted by God. Therefore whoever resists authority resists what God has appointed, and those who resist will incur judgement." Romans 13:1-2

Um... yeah.

Should this be here? It's not a fundies own words.

Rewards are far greater? It's a divine lobotomy.

a mind far far away

I've only heard about these folks in my studies of christian theology. I went back and done a little research, and it seems these guys are related, at least idealogically, to fundamentalist mormons. They're leaders have been arrested and put in jail in the last two years for pedophilia and bigamy. So to answer Headache, yes, that seems to be the trend. And since this sect seems to have started in the US, and moved onto Australia, it's only a matter of time before it moves onto that, if it hasn't already.

Almafeta

Ah, I thought Australia had been spared the fundies.

11/14/2008 5:14:16 PM

Antichrist

Well if they believe that licences are evil, then they shouldn't drive. If they used bicycles or walked they could legally carry on.

Oh right, the guns, I'm really, really, big on gun control. Yeah, those should be seized. If they're so peaceful, what do they need the guns for anyway?

"- Governments were made by man's hands and should therefore be opposed."

Well, it's a good thing God comes down regularly to give us clear and specific orders, right? He runs his anarcho-theocracy really well, right?
No human interference?
...

"- You cannot serve two masters - Yahweh and the government."

Well if you're not going to serve the government I hope they cut off your utilities and sell your land to somebody else. I'm sure Yahweh will save your ass, right? I mean, He is supposed to be your only master now.

Looks like the Australian government is going to have it's own Waco to contend with at some point.

This sect must consist of immigrant outsiders. The only things Aussies worship are:

Good beer
Good mates
Good sport

Leviticus? 'Bugger that! Chuck another shrimp on the barbie, mate!'

Old Viking

Australians are decent, pleasant people (except for sports), and they don't get their undies in a bunch about outbursts of forknuttery. However, stretch their patience too far at your own risk.

Sounds like the typical "Sovereign Citizen Tax Protestor" crowd we have over here in America.
