Quote# 50421

Firstly I need to say this. The whole chemical imbalance idea is just that, an idea. It's not based on proven science. Fact is doctors don't know exactly what causes mental illnesses, like depression. They know about serotonin, dopamine, chemicals in the brain that do affect mood. However, mental illnesses are not just an abnormality resulting from imbalances or deficiencies of those known biological chemicals. It's more than that. I know, because I've researched this. I'm not saying that means the medicines being prescribed due to mental illnesses aren't legit. I can't say that because I just don't know. But if person feels they need to take them, and feel they are helping them, then it's up to them.

Anyway, I believe certain mental disorders are a result of original sin, and the enemy's influence. I also believe God let's some of His people be born with certain mental disorders, (such as retardation) for reasons known only to Him, though one reason could be to help teach us about acceptance, compassion, love.

As far as depression. I believe not just original sin, and the foothold the devil got from it, which enables him to now freely attack us, but also our own personal sins we commit, help give him the enemy a door way that he also uses. Such as living a life of promiscuity, and the negative mental effects it can have, especially if one eventually realizes how wrong it is, and stops it, but is left with the memories. Also, sins committed against us. Like the various forms of abuse.

You'd think an omniscient, omnipotent being could figure out a better way to teach these things than to make people with severe disabilities, but then again I suppose JadoreAdonai don't think about anyone else and thinks it's perfectly fine for disabled people to suffer enormously in order to teach others a lesson. Hell, JadoreAdonai probably thinks that they deserve it, either for their own "sins" or for the "sins" of their parents.

(And obviously I haven't figured out how to make bold quoted text. Does anyone know?)

Ooh! And they were doing so well in the first paragraph.

Fredrik Svanberg beat me to it.

Being someone with severe depression, I take extreme offense at that idiocy.

Research should be more than perusing fundie websites and the bible.

So your god allows mental disorders in some people to teach arseholes like yourself concepts such as acceptance, love and compassion?

Ironically, these things are noticeably absent at Rapture Ready.

@ Fredrik Svanberg:

Could you please give me the papers based on this research (ideally in form of peer reviewed articles in renowned scientific magazines)

I know, because I've researched this.

"Research" does not mean "made stuff up and asked people who would tell me what I want to hear".

You don't know the history of psychiatry. I do.

Tom Cruise, is that you?

The first paragraph was going really well. This person actually seemed normal, then the second paragraph came along and everything fell apart. Sure mental illnesses are more than just chemical imbalances there is quite a lot to them making them very difficult to treat.
However, basing that additional aspect on original sin? Some people are beyond redemption.

Hey! This isn't fundie at all! This is unusually severe skepticism of science! That's 100% OK!

Oh, wait. There's that dive off the deep end as soon as the paragraph stops. WHOOPS!

"I also believe God let's some of His people be born with certain mental disorders, (such as retardation) for reasons known only to Him, though one reason could be to help teach us about acceptance, compassion, love."

It takes a special kind of arrogance to believe this nonsense. The patronizing fundie kind.

Note to JA: Reading the comments of other RR posters, or 'articles' from the deliverance ministries does not constitute research. Pick up a real medical book that specialises in mental disorders and be enlightened. Also, the only demons are the ones you give life to through your own paranoia, ignorance and blind faith.

Original sin? Sounds Catholic to me. Burn him!

FYI, original sin was one of the many problems Martin Luther had with Catholisism. You know, the man who started the reformation and ergo was responable for the Protestasnt religions. WTF are you non-catholic and non-orthadox Christians doing with a Catholic docterine?

If depression is caused by sin, listening to you must be a really big one.

As someone with depression and ADD, I have to say: THERE ARE NO DEMONS IN MY BRAIN.

"also believe God let's some of His people be born with certain mental disorders, (such as retardation) for reasons known only to Him"

That is painfully apparent after visiting your site.

"though one reason could be to help teach us about acceptance, compassion, love."

All of which you are totally lacking in. You people are ignorant, bigoted, heartless fools and you make me sick.

I think your religion is a result of mental illness.

"I know, because I've researched this."

Yeah, like you and your kind have 'researched' evolution, physics, astronomy, chemistry, biology, math, philosophy, etc.

"though one reason could be to help teach us about acceptance, compassion, love."

And so far, you have failed miserably.

"Like the various forms of abuse."

Bible bashing is a form of abuse.

And by the way, I was a christian most of my life, and 'god' never got rid of my Asperger's. As it is, I'd rather have Asperger's than god anyway. It helps me be analytical and logical.

Oh fuck you, you flaming idiot. You don't know jack shit about depression.

Your little theory falls flat on its ass.

Answer this one

Why was I suicidally depressed when I was a devout Catholic who prayed every day, went t church every week and hadn't even touched a member of the opposite sex, while I am happy as can be as an irreverant atheist fucking 8 times a week, occasionally shoplifting, smoking weed, fervantly mocking God, and taking birth control?

Funny how religiousness and depression have an inverse relationship. As if a dope like you even knows what that is.

UGH.
