I'm not a movie prude; we check out many kinds of movies. And I expect most anything coming out of Hollywood, with any rating, to include something contrary to my values. I let most of it roll off my back. But with Happy Feet, I didn't expect my conservative Christian family to be assaulted with what we all recognized as a anti-Christian screed, with open mockery of traditional Christian preaching against values and lifestyles contrary to church teachings. It was abundantly clear that Happy Feet substituted homosexuality with dancing as the "different" lifestyle that was the unfair target of an Inquisition on ice. It was Dirty Dancing and Footloose all over again, but with the rhetoric and situation developed to make religious criticism of homosexuality counter to everything good and pleasing.

Happy Feet did make some wonderful points about tolerance, accepting differences, and loving someone for who they are. But, yeah, that's just so awful...
I especially liked how the religious penguins realized how they were flat-out wrong. Religion can't solve everything. And it made me chuckle when one of them called an Adelie a 'heathen.'
I used to work at a movie theater, and I bet you're one of those assholes who don't read any info about the movie you're going to see, sit through the entire movie, then come out and ask for a manager so you can bitch and moan about how offended you were and how you want your money back even though you sat through the whole movie. We had quite a few people pull this little trick and they always ended up with a refund or free snacks or passes. Cheap bastards.
As for Happy Feet being anti-christian and pro-homosexual, that's just stupid. It's a kids movie with the eeevilll message that it's okay to be different from everyone else, and of course there's the environmental message, too. Being different does not always mean OMG TEH GAYS! How strange that you'd get that kind of vibe from a movie about talking, tap dancing penguins, but then you're probably one of those morons who think that the new Chips Ahoy commercial is promoting sex with cookies. If you see filth and perversion everywhere you look, even in children's movies, then it's probably YOU who is the pervert. Get some help, freak.
Oh, I get it... I can follow this logic.
We live in this really old house, and there is a crack in the plaster on the wall going up to the third floor.
Anyway, that crack - in the plaster - is a substitute for homosexuality.
Its dark crevice screams for man-on-man action.
Its jagged edges reflect the fissures that would result in our society, should Gay Marriage ever become a nationwide reality.
It is "DIFFERENT" from the rest of the walls...
The movie is titled Happy Feet .
"Gay" is a synonym for "happy."
So, to be fair, it's pretty obvious that this movie must really be about gays with a foot fetish. The dancing penguins are just a distraction from the real plot.[/sarcasm]

Fundies just love being persecuted don't they? Even when they aren't, they have to convince themselves that they really are!
Persecution complex. Pure and simple.
I'm not a comic book prude, but Jesus, that Donald Duck - OMG, I'm almost embarassed to say it - doesn't wear any
[ p - a - n - t - s ] Shh, don't tell the kids, the knowledge of this alone will corrupt their little minds.
And that evil little pervert; Mickey Mouse, with that long black thing hanging out of his shorts - what the hell IS that supposed to be? His "tail"? Riiiiight. Like mice have tails. I bet your "science" tells you this.
Wait...you are pissed off because Happy Feet promoted homosexuality (which I have yet to see in it) instead of the clear environmental message?! I do not understand these people...
BTW: real men are dancers.
Well, I thought he was trying to impress the girl penguin he liked and her family? Didn't he end up with her in the end? I saw it too long ago to remember the details.
You just didn't like it because its true message was that differences are to be celebrated rather than destroyed.
...counter to everything good and pleasing
For the life of me, I can't figure out what things are "good and pleasing" to Jim here.
C'mon, Jim, give us a hint. Is praying while children suffer, one of them?
You people aren't happy unless you can find some stupid-ass reason to feel persecuted, are you?
What a compelling reason to become a Christian, "Join us and feel as if everyone is against you."
Give me a break.
You know, I still maintain that Happy Feet did contain a subtle jab at dogmatic belief and appeals to tradition but to be specifically persecuting Christians for their persecution of homosexuals? Come on, now you're really paranoid.
I find it enormously ironic that you feel persecuted from watching a penguin movie when you have been actively restricting the rights and demonizing, homosexuals. Maybe, just maybe you should try to learn a lesson from this experience.
Think of how offended you felt after watching Happy Feet, now imagine that multiplied by a hundred. Now add in people actively trying to suppress your rights. Imagine not being able to find a job because employers hate Christians. Imagine being frightened of trying to meet new people because they may beat you up for loving Jesus. Imagine being nearly driven to suicide because your friends and family think that you're an abomination, a freak of nature, demon infested heathen etc etc
Then again, you don't know what real persecution actually looks like, only your fake persecution where everyone must agree with you or you're being persecuted.
"with the rhetoric and situation developed to make religious criticism of homosexuality counter to everything good and pleasing."
And, that is somehow wrong?
It is this sort of grasping-at-straws "literary criticism" that occasionally makes me sad to be an English major. Sometimes a tree is just a tree, damn it! Why can't you just enjoy a feel-good movie for once?
At least the rant is creative, if nothing else. I would expect this out of an X-Men review, but Happy Feet? Wow.
I thought Happy Feet was an excellent movie- it taught tolerance, love, and respect for others. Plus, the CG penguins were really cute. I'll admit it- I bought the DVD.
But then again, tolerance, love, and respect for others are things that you probably don't like, huh, Jim?
while one of the major themes of the movie was that it's ok to be different, there was absolutely no suggestion that they were talking about a specific difference, such as homosexuality. Hey, they could have been commenting on atheist parents who might not be tolerant of their child's new found Christianity... :)
Happy Feet...was about gay penguins. Suuuuure, it was...
This one's for you, Jim:

How do you get "homosexuality" from dancing penguins...?
And, your "religious criticism" has a tendency to take the form of beatings, vandalism, bullying, and even murder. Are you telling us you approve of these crimes?
Um, dude, the whole movie consisted of the main character dancing as his way to attract a female. There was no homosexuality. ^^;;
There are better ways for a Christain to criticize this movie. Why don't you think a bit more deeply and look at the conflict between religion and secularism instead? Then you might find some fodder.
What about Jesus, who dared to be different from the Jews, the group he belonged to?, is he an allegory for homosexuality too, following your stupid standards?, what about the Founding Fathers, who were different from England and eventually broke with it?
What?
Dancing?
Must be a Baptist.
yup, not only GAY but two male penguins who were Father and Son danced together to Tom Jones. How GAY can you possibly GET !!
There was an almost sex scene with the girl penguin singing and getting her butt slapped.
Who knew that Happy Feet was thinly concealed Gay and fetish PORN>
No, that was a different penguin movie (a TV documentary, perhaps?) that had the gay penguins in it. I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that you left the movie in the first ten minutes and dry-labbed your review.
Confused?
