Lake County, IL. -- A Waukegan mother, charged today with fatally stabbing her 6-year-old daughter, first claimed the girl attacked her, then told police she thought the girl was possessed by a demon, Lake County prosecutors said as a judge set bail for 25-year-old Nelly Vasquez-Salazar at $5 million.
Vasquez-Salazar was charged with two counts of first-degree murder in the death of her only child, Evelyn, 6.
The girl was found dead early Monday in the Waukegan apartment she shared with her mother.
Vasquez-Salazar reportedly told police she believed her daughter - who had recently began sleepwalking - was possessed.
"She claimed the little girl was possessed by a demon," prosecutor Steve Scheller said in court. "She was an intelligent, vibrant, beautiful little girl. She was, in fact, an angel."

I want to think, this isn't religion, it's insanity. But have you ever noticed that the guy who "hears god" is always up to no good?
Stories like this just make me sick. Not just the murder, but the fact that so many people would die to provide a little six year old girl with a loving, safe home. And, yes, fundies, that includes gay atheists.
@SurfinSeaOtter:
Weird. Since they didn't make the ridiculous extrapolation to infinite murder, I guess the 6-year-old must have already been pregnant.
After all, Jesus told her to have babies so Christians could take over the world.
Hey, evil evolutionst atheists don't kill kids because they're 'possessed by demons,' at least.
This is just sad... Though, I could bet that the woman simply didn't want the child and killed her, then made up the excuse that she was 'possessed.'
I'm confused about the two counts of murder.
Other than that, I have yet to hear an atheist mother killed her child because Darwin told her to.
And the Christian worldview once again proves its ability to mesh with reality....with horrifying results. Damn...this is really infuriating! Point this kind of stuff out to fundies, and they'll call out slander and blatantly deny that Christian ideology had an influence in these tragedies, their stubborn refusal to acknowledge the religious connection allowing for this kind of thing to pop up over and over again...
This is really starting to become more than I can take...
2 counts of murder for 1 murder is not uncommon in the u.s.a.
Example 1:
"An Illinois grand jury soon indicted Wofford on two counts of murder, one count charging that he 'intentionally and knowingly shot and killed Harold Crawford,' the other that he 'shot and killed Harold Crawford with a gun, knowing that such shooting with a gun created a strong probability of death or great bodily harm to said Harold Crawford.'"

Example 2:
"Defendant was convicted of the murder of a single victim based on four different theories: (1) murder by abuse... (2) murder by abuse involving recklessness under circumstances...-(3)-(4) two counts of felony murder--i.e., murder in the course of and in furtherance of committing the crime of second-degree assault"

Stupid, ignorant, superstitious, fundamentalist cunt!
I don't drop the "C" word lightly.
I don't know what's worse, that she still believes in demons just because she suffers from an unimportant sleeping anomaly, or that she tries to hide her fault accusing the girl and intends the police officers and all sane people to believe that she was able, at six, to attack her so badly as to kill her in such a cruel way.
I don't know. Even if religion had never been dreamed up, this woman's mental instability would just have manifested itself in another way. Of course, without the demon delusion she may not have killed her daughter, but I still wouldn't blame this on religion per se.
This is freakish--I used to work at that office. With Steve Scheller.
Whoever said he "wins" is absolutely correct; Steve is a real honest, hard-working, stand-up kind of guy. I hope he kicks ass at this trial.
You have to be a very special kind of stupid (or confused enough to easily constitute a mental disorder) to think, for even one moment, that you might get away with a self defence claim for stabbing a six year old girl to death. It's no suprise, sadly, that someone so stupid would utterly fail to comprehend something like sleepwalking, and scare themselves shitless telling themselves tales of demons to try and explain it.
Cops: "My god! You killed your daughter!"
Mom: "Um ... she attacked me! Yeah, that's it, that's the ticket! She was trying to kill me, I had to defend myself!"
Cops: "Your six-year-old daughter was a threat to your life?! Oh, come on! She wasn't even holding a gun or anything."
Mom: "Um ... er ... she was ... um ... posessed by a demon!"
Confused?
