[On removing 'Under God' from the pledge of allegiance]

Atheism is a religious belief, and is therefore a religion. (Think hate not being the opposite of love.) So, you're imposing your religion on us when you take out the words.

So not mentioning anything about religion makes it religous? That makes me a confused panda.

Except that they weren't there to begin with.

Why is that you assholes don't give a shit about something until it's being removed? You didn't care enough to put a 10 Commandments statue in front of Moore's courthouse, but when they were being removed, suddenly there's blasphemy afoot.

Give me a break.

False dichotomy. And stop disgracing the name of Thrawn, failure.

Check with a dictionary before using words you don't understand, sonny boy. Makes you look less of a dumbass.

You usually put in additional words in the Pledge of Allegiance when imposing a religion on people. Something in the order of "under god."

Try another argument. This one is silly.

Ah yes, the ever popular "You're a bigot for not letting us have preferential treatment over everybody else" ploy.

In other news, black is white and freedom is slavery.

How about everybody who wants to say "Under God" say it, and everyone who doesn't want to, not say it? It sounds like less trouble than actually removing it, and will probably anger less people.

Am I wrong or was the UG put in in the '50s by the Eisenhower Admin. along with IGWT on the money - to garner fundie votes ? Imposing religion on the rest of us.

Actually, we're restoring the pre-Cold War status quo.

Atheism is a lack of belief in God. A belief in God is a major tenant of all religions. Therefore atheism is not a religion, in fact it can be considered a lack of religion.

YOU FAIL.

STFU. You've got oatmeal for brains.

Humanism. That is the implicit common denominator among all religions and philosophies, not-believing included.

"God" is an overly ambiguous generic term. I never liked it.
And the g0d of Abraham doesn't inspire my trust at all.

So, as a Republic we are about as "under God" as we are "indivisible". Don't get me started. We would have been better served by discarding the Pledge along with the loyalty oaths.

IIRC, "IGWT" was on the paper money for quite some time. Civil War era...?

@CausticGnostic: IGWT was added to the paper money in 1957. It had been on the coins since just after the civil war.

I'm about to unleash the most horrible religious imposition ever to be seen on the internet. I apologize to anyone who is disturbed by this.

There. I'm sorry about that, it had to not be said.

The opposite of love, is apathy.

Anyone who's been in love can tell you hate can just as easily go hand in hand with it.

12/23/2007 7:25:25 AM

Two facts. It's not a religion. Second, "one nation under God" isn't impossing your beliefs? WTF?

Yes, and the current pledge promotes Holocaust denial by not mentioning it.

Atheism is a religious belief, and is therefore a religion.

- So it qualifies for tax relief?

Atheism is a religious belief, and is therefore a religion.

Atheism is a religion like not killing someone is murder.

12/23/2007 11:16:09 AM

First the Pledge was written and survived the first 62 years of it's existence without "Under God", so they are taking out words added to appease people like you and IMPOSE your religion on others. Read a history book. Atheism is a religious un-belief(NO GODS), has no formal rites, or commonly held dogma, therefore it does not fulfill any requirements for a religion. Get a dictionary. And quit lying.

Great! I think I'll go establish the First Church of Atheism downtown here and get tax-exempt status for my church. Then, according to my non-existent atheist scriptures, all church-members will be ordained ministers of atheism. And we'll go out as missionaries to spread the good news of nothing, and suck out tax-dollars to conduct our work. We'll hand out condoms and abortion pills and kill kittens, all on the US taxpayers' dollar! Then we'll go build some private atheist schools, and we'll siphon off even more tax-dollars for our faith-based activities.

Whee!

All the while, we'll be lobbying Congress to remove all tax-exempt benefits from Christian churches and organizations, since Christianity is not a religion.
