Man is depraived! Completely depraived. Left to our own devices we seek our own needs even at the expense of others. What drives us to reach out and help others? Why do we give to the poor? There is certainly NOTHING Darwinian in helping others. It is by the grace of the Holy Spirit the we feel the twinge of our conscience (which is the Holy Spirit) helping us feel/express compassion, forgiveness, love.

Actually, if you want to look at it in another way, helping each other has, and will, bring benefit to all parties and allow us to survive longer and live better.
However, we don't need to be told by heavenl beings to do so.

Why not? You help your boss, maybe he puts in a good word and you get promoted. You help your neighbor and maybe he doesn't complain when your dog barks. You smile at someone and maybe he smiles back. Ever heard of "what goes around comes around"? If the only reason someone helps another is because he thinks God will pat him on the back and say "good boy" like a fucking beagle, he needs to reread Matthew, Chapter 6.

No, natural selection favors humans who develop a conscience, even if they call it religion, because it strengthens the species as a whole. Which is why I will follow Social Darwinism by being nice.

Maybe, maybe not. Nonetheless, the Theory of Evolution is still true. Whether it describes a world you're comfortable with or not, it's true.
But being that we aren't asexual creatures, fully capable of self survival from birth, then it becomes survival of the fittest group . A fit group is one where members help each other, such as with compassion, forgiveness, and love. It's really not a hard concept.

It always works better if you use poor grammar, making it "I tells ya", instead of "I tell you". Gives more of a chaotic feel to it.
Helping others = survival of the species, dimwit.
Considering how many times we hear fundies talk about how the poor deserve to be poor, how they're being 'punished,' and how they don't want to be bothered with things like charity and compassion - not to mention how everyone who doesn't follow them blindly is going to burn - I think I know who I'm going to side with on this one.

According to the Book of Acts, the Holy Spirit only started sticking his fingers in human affairs after the death, resurrection, and ascension of Jesus (i.e. on Pentecost).
So are you saying that before the Pentecost, NO ONE felt/expressed compassion, forgiveness, or love? Including all the heroes of the Old Testament?
Helping others of your species not to die is helping to ensure the further propagation of your species, which is essentially Darwinian. Human decency's great stuff, innit? Plus, it's just the ethical thing to do.

Let's see, hmm, how to tear this apart... if such behavior aids us in facilitating an environmental situation that is favorable to our survival and reproductive success then it has everything to do with Darwinian evolution, retard. Take a class.
If we didn't help each other, our species would have been extinct a hundred thousand years ago. It's only our cooperation that has kept us alive and on top for so long. Aiding each other IS aiding ourselves.
If we all helped each other all the time, there wouldn't be any poor.
oooh, oooh, pick me! I can answer this! In purely scientific terms, humans are social animals, social animals do what's best for the group, in this case helping others and giving to the poor.
Helping each other helps the species survive. One lonely human is a very weak animal. A cooperating pack of humans is a formidable force.
