I don't care who wants to bastardize the definition...but hating gays is not homophobic...a phobia is a fear of something

if you hate bananas, you're not bananaphobic

But you don't eat gays do you? Or do you? ^_~

If your hatred of bananas is completely irrational and disproportionate, then you are bananaphobic.

Well, besides making such a stupid case... are you saying you are NOT afraid of homosexuals? I guess that whole bit about \"teh homosexual agenda\", and how \"your kids are being brainwashed\", and that \"christians are a persecuted minority\" was just your hatred... because obviously no straight, redblooded american would be afraid of gays *snicker*

If you hate bananas, you don´t eat them, not harrass them and slander them.

ABeastOfPrey, that goes \"Fear leads to anger, anger leads to hate...\"

Fear born of a lack of understanding.

4/11/2007 10:07:18 AM

Yes you are. An irrational fear is an irrational fear. If you were to go around calling banana's derogatory names for no reason, and then beat them up, it would show that you have a deep-seated problem with bananas, and a name would be attached to it.

4/11/2007 10:20:37 AM

I had a friend who was afraid of bananas. She got conditioned because every time her dad would eat a banana at breakfast, she would smell his aftershave while she ate her cereal, and would therefore, get very nauceated.

Now she can't be in the same room as a banana. Haha, I'm not joking.

The outright hysteria that fundies display towards homosexuals smacks of deep-seated, desperate fear. That's the only way to explain their obsession with homosexuality.

4/11/2007 11:47:24 AM

Fear and hate are intrinsically linked chowderhead.

4/11/2007 1:20:49 PM

Well, an irrational hatred is still a phobia.
Look it up in a dictionary, kid.

Anyway, I'd say that irrational claims of a 'gay agenda,' delusions of persecution and a violent \"get them before they get me\" response to homosexuals points to fear as the stimulus.

Homophobia is a form of fear. Underlying it are false assumptions about gays: that they are pedophiles and that they attempt to \"recruit\" people into homosexuality (see JaSon's ProLife post on fstdt). Otherwise, why care about them one way or another, since without these false assumptions, they have no effect on your life?

4/11/2007 2:18:10 PM

Homophobia is the hatred and/or fear of homosexuals and homosexuality: Homophobia is the fear of, aversion to, or discrimination against homosexuality or homosexuals. It can also mean hatred, hostility, or disapproval of homosexual people, sexual behavior, or cultures, and is generally used to insinuate bigotry. The term homophobic means \"prejudiced against homosexual people,\" and a person who is homophobic is a homophobe. --Wiki

Many irrational hatreds stem from fears.

I invite you to look up homophobia in a good dictionary. Get one of the smart people to show you how to use a dictionary.

Homophobia isn't fear of gay people, it's fear of being gay. Homophobes are petrified of the possibility that they're gay, and the ones that are tend to be the ones that lash out the hardest against other gay people.

\"Bananaphobe\" would be a fantastic name for a rock band.

4/11/2007 4:59:04 PM

How many times must we hear this same tired, bullshit argument?

4/11/2007 5:28:02 PM

His point is purely semantic, but he's right. A phobia is an irrational fear, not an irrational hatred.

While it's true that hatred can be the product of fear, it isn't always that way, and we shouldn't regard all those who hate as doing so from fear.

4/11/2007 6:02:40 PM

Well you know, generally arachnaphobes hate spiders, and hydrophobes hate water, etc. People most strongly hate the things that they fear.

4/11/2007 7:16:15 PM

I love how he picks probably the most unintentially erotic object to stick \"phobe\" at the end of for his example. hee. bananas
