(Keith Ellison, D-MN, takes oath of office on Quran)
A sad day for America...the Bible has truly been pushed aside for the benefit of self-serving politicians...

^ Theoreticaly they could swear on the Consitution, but they wouldn't last a second term if they admited to being an Atheist. Personaly I would rather everyone swear on the Consitution because a large majority of the United States is illiterate conserning their holy texts.
Why do we even have oaths, the last few presidents proved that polititions have no legal obligation to help the country.
@Matthew 5:33-37
[Jesus said,] Again, you have heard that the ancients were told, 'YOU SHALL NOT MAKE FALSE VOWS, BUT SHALL FULFILL YOUR VOWS TO THE LORD.' But I say to you, make no oath at all , either by heaven, for it is the throne of God, or by the earth, for it is the footstool of His feet, or by Jerusalem, for it is THE CITY OF THE GREAT KING. Nor shall you make an oath by your head, for you cannot make one hair white or black. But let your statement be, 'Yes, yes' or 'No, no'; anything beyond these is of evil.

Fixed that for ya.
Like we have any politicians that live according to any moral belief systems nowadays
Maybe this guy will be the first. How mad would that make the fundies?
As an atheist, I don't give a damn what anyone swears upon. It seems to me that if one needs to swear on a "holy" book, one is really just admitting that his/her word isn't any good on it's own. Why should I think his/her word would be any better because of the presence of scriptures?
As an atheist, a political neutral, and a life-long Minnesotan, I have this to say...
Defensor Fidei, die in a fire.
Who gives a fuck what book he swears upon? Bible, Qu'ran, a lucky PEZ dispenser. It's all just about as pointless as the next. People should not make oaths by swearing on anything. They should be responsible for what they say all by themselves.
When the Government forces Christians to swear on a Satanic Bible, only then should you complain, DF. Otherwise, shut up.
The whole point of swearing an oath on a book is to show your willingness to make the promise before God as well as man. It's meaningless to swear an oath on a book unless you honestly believe you're swearing before God. Since he's a Muslim, an oath on the Quran would be the most serious oath he could utter.
Personally, I always thought that the oath of office should be taken with one hand on a copy of the Constitution, not on the Bible.
No one makes a big stink when a Jewish elected official takes the oath of office on a version of the Bible with the New Testament left out...so why can't a Koran be used? It's the Holy Book of his religion, after all.
But I still think we should use the Constitution instead. After all, that's the law they are swearing to uphold...
Do you understand nothing for yourselves? They used the book he respects. The point of swearing on the Bible is that it's a binding oath because of the person's respect for the sanctity of the document -- whatever document. It was never about the Bible specifically, and the Quran is sacred to this man. Do you want him sworn in properly, or is it more important that he put his flesh hand on your paper book?
Confused?
So were we! You can find all of this, and more, on Fundies Say the Darndest Things!
