Well, this is the bottom line for me. You might have came from an ape, or any of the other liberal Anti-Christian, hard-core evolutionists might have, BUT I DID NOT! I was formed with the care and dilligence of one who has a plan for me and my life, and wants me to spend eternity with him in a place where suffering and despair do not exist. Don't like it? That's your problem, not mine. I can't force anyone to believe the way I do, nor can my brother Jeremiah or any of the others on here. All we can do is direct you towards the truth, of which there is significant evidence should you so choose to get up off your lazy hind-end and research it. But otherwise than that, we have our assurance, and we don't need people like you telling us that we're fools, because it isn't your call as to where we're going. If you feel satisfied in the fact of your belief that once you die, that's it, ka-poof .... hey great, I hope you can find a strong anti-depressant once you hit 70-80, because that's a scary thought. We don't have that problem, we have the assurance of a MUCH GREATER life ahead.
Now ... about that genetic mutation stuff that someone was spouting off about earlier. A genetic mutation is something that happens ONE TIME. It does not pass on to the off-spring, and it does not transfer to the female mate. I was fortunate enough to be a student during a highly informative study during Wednesday night Bible study by a 35+ year experience physician, who was also one of the first to graduate from the local Osteopathic School of Medicine. And also a graduate of one of the major Universities within our state ... needless to say, he knows what he's talking about. He is a good friend of the family, when I can I'll get some more information on the subject from him and post it.

So the plan god gave you for your life is to get defensive and call people names?
How about saying 'that someone was talking about' instead of 'spouting' you really come off nasty.
Your ideas on genetic mutation are ridiculous. If genetic mutations happen only 'one time' how come there are names for various mutations? Answer? They happen all over the world, more than once. Why don't you type 'depleted uranium' into a google search. DU is the stuff we are filling Iraq with right now. It causes severe birth defects, and has a life of 4.5 billion years.
ONE TIME my fucking ass.
Ever heard of albinoism? Red hair? Lobster claws on people? Six toes/fingers per hand? Conjoined twins? These ARE passed along, and they are caused by defects in the splitting and developing process of the early cells. Before there is a brain in a foetus, it could already have no arms or legs.
Your one biblestudy physician is not exactly what I would call a concrete source. Of course, the bible isn't either and you blindly believe that.
"All we can do is direct you towards the truth"
What truth is that exactly? The wholly babble? Read it. Didn't find 'the truth' though. Did find alot of contridictions and blatant lies however. Assurance of a much greater life? I would love proof of that as long as the answer again, isn't 'it's in the bible'.
I do get off my ass and look things up. But it is obvious that you do not. You read one book and talk to people who only read that one book. So you have a short-sighted view, about a book that was plagerized from older religions, you have a 'family friend' that told you that 1+4=7.
I have read many books including yours, use the brain and reasoning in me to look at things objectively and with no pre-conceived notions, admit that what I know is falliable, adn have a billion brothers and sisters around the world who are in agreement with me.
Keep your bible, keep bush and start seeking answers. I lived the lie of christianity for many years. It was hard to accept my wasted time. But I sure didn't want to be 99 years old and living a lie. I give myself the respect to think and act for myself, and not base my life on the unprovable. Remember, god is super-powerful and can do anything he wants to do. He apparantly wants you to 'have faith' about everything including the fact that he allows suffering and torture and death all of the time. How all-powerful is someone who hasn't made an appearance in over 2000 years?
Your "physician" friend is a quack. Attending an Osteopathic "School" of "Medicine" would make someone as much a physician as Uri Geller is a phsychic. Your 35+ year experience con-man believes that manipulating your bones can cure diseases. Needless to say, he has no fucking clue what he's talking about (and he has probably help hundreds of "patients" to early graves by convincing them they don't need to see a "conventional" doctor).
Mr. Turquoise
A genetic mutation is something that happens ONE TIME. It does not pass on to the off-spring,
Usually true (the mutation has to occur either early enough in the developmental process that the gametes contain the mutation as well, or in one of the gametes) ... but not always. And that's the important part.
True, individuals do not evolve -- that is the one part your D.O. friend managed to communicate correctly to you. Everything else, however, either he or you got wrong, family friend or not.
Instead of basing your entire grasp of science on ONE evening's Bible study (yeah, there's a great science forum) featuring the input of ONE guy who deals in osteopathy (which is not even mainstream medical science, let alone evolutionary biology), consider the weight of literally billions of books, articles, and professional papers by professional biologists and other scientists over the last century and a half, sifting the evidence and collectively supporting evolution as a fact.
Now, this has no bearing whatsoever on God; you do NOT have to stop believing in God. Many people believe that God used evolution to bring about the world as you see it, and science cannot (and does not ) disagree. But if you think that believing in God means that you MUST NOT believe in science, then your belief system is asking you to deny reality -- and that is too great a sacrifice for any belief, however comforting you may find it. That is not just faith; that is called delusion.

You might have came from an ape, or any of the other liberal Anti-Christian, hard-core evolutionists might have, BUT I DID NOT!
The issue is that we are the same species. If I came from an ape, so did you. We all are domesticatec apes and no amount of wishful thinking will change that
All we can do is direct you towards the truth, of which there is significant evidence should you so choose to get up off your lazy hind-end and research it.
There are well established criteria useful for estimating the truth value of claims and evaluating evidence. I and a great number of skeptics have got off our lazy hind-ends and have research it. Guess what? You're a fool.
We don't have that problem, we have the assurance of a MUCH GREATER life ahead.
More wishful thinking, please provide evidence.

See above re: well established criteria. Your friend falls down on a number of points. Why don't you get information from a reputable, peer reviewed source and get back to us.
The issue is that we are the same species. If I came from an ape, so did you. We all are domesticated apes and no amount of wishful thinking will change that
But don't you see? If we were intelligently designed by an omnipotent creator, there could be some people who came from apes and some people who were created by God, and both of these people could interbreed perfectly!
Where'd you think Cain got his wife from, anyway? ;)

Whatever helps you sleep at night and get through the day, Lucas. If it makes you feel special and whole to believe you were specially crafted by a big guy in the sky who's going to bathe you in the white light of his radience for eternity after you die, be my guest.
Glad this guy was nice enough to design you a flawless body as well. Wait, it isn't near it.
Lucas-poo, please take a course in biolgy. If the mutation occurs in the DNA that is getting passed on, it gets passed on. This happens often.
YOU LOSE!
<<"A genetic mutation is something that happens ONE TIME. It does not pass on to the off-spring,"

So wait, if I drank a gallon of liquid uranium, grew five arms and a third eye, and then had kids, are you saying that my kids would not have five arms or a third eye?
So wait, if I drank a gallon of liquid uranium, grew five arms and a third eye, and then had kids, are you saying that my kids would not have five arms or a third eye?
Probably not. But if the uranium damaged the genes in your gonads (testes or ovaries), something odd (not necessarily the same thing that happened to you) may be passed on.
Each of your cells has a complete set of your genes. But your body has two types of cells: germinal and somatic. Germinal cells are found in your gonads. Somatic cells are found in the rest of your body. If a somatic cell suffers genetic damage, odd things could happen to that cell (e.g., cancer), but they wouldn't likely be passed on. But if a germinal cell's genes (e.g., those used to make eggs or sperm) are damaged, that could be passed on, because those are the genes that are used to build your children. Whether the damage would be expressed, and how, would depend on where the damage is and the genetic contribution of your partner. That's not the whole story, but it's close enough.
Regardless of the technicalities, though, Lucas' statement is still wrong. Huntington's disease, hemophilia and color-blindness are all examples of "mutations" passed on to one's children.
Huntington's is caused by a well-known genetic defect on chromosome #4 - a constant repeating of a short genetic sequence, like a stuck key on a keyboard, sometimes over 100 times. If one parent has the disease, the chances of each of their children inheriting it is 50%.

Damn, that's what I meant, I was typing too fast to keep it straight. Thanks for the correction!
Well, this is the bottom line for me.
Not to worry. I'm sure you'll start to dig.
You might have came from an ape, or any of the other liberal Anti-Christian, hard-core evolutionists might have, BUT I DID NOT!
In other words, you are not a human? What, pray tell, are you, then? Aside, of course, from "an idiot".
I was formed with the care and dilligence of one who has a plan for me and my life, and wants me to spend eternity with him in a place where suffering and despair do not exist.
Oh. A delusional human.
Don't like it?
Actually, as long as you're not trying to inflict your beliefs on other people, I don't really care what crazy shit you believe.
That's your problem, not mine.
Good thing you're not trying to take on anyone else's; you've clearly got plenty of your own.
I can't force anyone to believe the way I do, nor can my brother Jeremiah or any of the others on here.
And thank goodness. I don't want to be brain damaged.
All we can do is direct you towards the truth,
By acting in a manner completely opposite truth, therefore driving us away from you, and towards truth?
of which there is significant evidence should you so choose to get up off your lazy hind-end and research it.
I hope you're talking about the truth, and not your delusional fantasies, here.
But otherwise than that, we have our assurance,
From your invisible friend, and your book about your invisible friend, and from all the other friends of invisible friends sufficiently similar to yours?
and we don't need people like you telling us that we're fools,
Because you already know it?
because it isn't your call as to where we're going.
Oh. I guess I should have expected a non-sequitor
If you feel satisfied in the fact of your belief that once you die, that's it, ka-poof
You could have left out "of your belief", and the sentence would have meant the same thing.
.... hey great, I hope you can find a strong anti-depressant once you hit 70-80, because that's a scary thought.
To you, perhaps. I would like to live a bit more than 70-80 years, but I have no desire to pretend that I'll live forever.
We don't have that problem, we have the assurance of a MUCH GREATER life ahead.
Yeah. Sure you do. You know what? I just don't fucking care. Shut up about it already.
Now ... about that genetic mutation stuff that someone was spouting off about earlier.
Oh no. Now you think you know something about genetics? Did your invisible friend tell you about those, too?
A genetic mutation is something that happens ONE TIME.
Actually, it happens, on average, at least once for every billion base pairs that are copied.
It does not pass on to the off-spring,
It does if it occurs to cells that become offspring.
and it does not transfer to the female mate.
Um... did anyone ever claim otherwise?
I was fortunate enough to be a student during a highly informative study during Wednesday night Bible study by a 35+ year experience physician, who was also one of the first to graduate from the local Osteopathic School of Medicine.
1) physicians are not geneticists. In fact, given some of the stupid shit I've seen MDs say, they aren't even necessarily very good biologists.
2) osteopaths are quacks, not physicians. I suppose he might be both, but I'm dubious, to say the least.
3) quacks are not necessarily geneticists, or biologists, or scientists of any stripe.
And also a graduate of one of the major Universities within our state
What did he study there? Communications? Liberal Arts?
... needless to say, he knows what he's talking about.
Either you've misrepresented him, or obviously, he doesn't. Regardless, there is no indication that he is "obviously" an expert on anything.
He is a good friend of the family, when I can I'll get some more information on the subject from him and post it.
If it's up to the standards of this "information", don't bother, because it's wrong.
Well, this is the bottom line for me. You might have came from an ape, or any of the other liberal Anti-Christian, hard-core evolutionists might have, BUT I DID NOT! I was formed with the care and dilligence of one who has a plan for me and my life...
Please show me the exact point on your body that bares the words "Made on Magrathea."
...and wants me to spend eternity with him in a place where suffering and despair do not exist.
He's willing to pay for an eternity with Eccentrica Gallumbits, the triple-breasted whore of Eroticon 6? That sounds wonderful except that he's going to be there with you the whole time. Damn, you really need to read the fine print.
All we can do is direct you towards the truth, of which there is significant evidence should you so choose to get up off your lazy hind-end and research it.
Yes, the evidence is out there. Unfortunately, it happens to disagree with you.
If you feel satisfied in the fact of your belief that once you die, that's it, ka-poof .... hey great, I hope you can find a strong anti-depressant once you hit 70-80, because that's a scary thought.
My grandmother is well into her 80s, and certainly doesn't need any antidepressants. I've never asked her about her religious beliefs, so I don't know if she's an atheist, but the family's Jewish. None of us have ever believed in an afterlife.
We don't have that problem, we have the assurance of a MUCH GREATER life ahead.
Oops! You made a little typo there. I think you meant to say: "We don't have that problem, we have the assumption of a MUCH GREATER life ahead."
Now ... about that genetic mutation stuff that someone was spouting off about earlier.
If you deem a key aspect of your opponent's evidence to be mere "spouting off," you are obviously not interested in being rational.
A genetic mutation is something that happens ONE TIME. It does not pass on to the off-spring...
Sigh. You ignore a key aspect of your opponent's evidence until you push it away no longer, then deem it mere "spouting off" and build a straw man of it to use in your argument.
...and it does not transfer to the female mate.
Everyone knows that. Duh.
You state the obvious, and claim that its opposite is a key part of your opponent's argument. Yeah, that's kinda the definition of a straw man, just so you know.
I was fortunate enough to be a student during a highly informative study during Wednesday night Bible study by a 35+ year experience physician, who was also one of the first to graduate from the local Osteopathic School of Medicine.

Your source is unreliable. A doctor is not necessarily an expert in biology, and a DO is not necessarily a legitimate doctor.

Well I would have failed the fucker.
Genetic mutations are heritable. They must be. There can be no change in a person that is not traced to genetics, assuming the change was present at birth.
Seriously, any eleventh-grade biology student knows this!!!!!
If I were an ape I would be offended to be mentioned in the same paragraph as this imbecile.
Oh yes, and the words "highly informative" and "Bible study" in the same sentence amount to about as classic an oxymoron as one can find anywhere.
There, there, dearie. Calm down, we are not out to get you.
What we want is to continue teaching kids scientific facts only in schools.
You have every right to believe whatever you want, as long as you keep it to yourself.
Most of us here has read the Bible, parts of it at least, and we already know about the "evidence" for your "truth".
Many people at the age of 80-90 are rather done with life and content with it ending. Some of these people believe that you go on to a heaven, some that you go to sleep forever. None of these things are the least bit scary, not to me anyway, and I'm only 40 years old. Not that I want to die today, I want to live another 40 or 50 years first, please.
What does a general physician know about geology and biology, that renowned biologists and geologists don't? He probably knows what he's talking about, when the topic is osteopathy. But we are not talking about osteopathy right now, are we?
Mutations affect genetics. Genetics are passed down from parent to offspring.
Also, death is scary to living things. Your reaction to it is purely psychotic.
Confused?
