I think we're all arguing past each other rather than at each other. Nobody's disagreeing that people cross lines in either direction, or saying that we should let them. The example you cited is definitely pertinent: as a fan of the show in question I'm absolutely embarrassed that that happened, and thankful that the show's creators denounced that sort of behavior from "fans" as quickly as they did.
But here's the issue: by allowing the term "SJW" to stand as it exists, we are, intentionally or not, allowing the stereotype to pervade those who are less destructive about advocating for social issues. Nobody's denying that these "SJW's" go too far at times. A few of us (myself included) were saying that this particular example showed signs of being a fraud, but the whole problem with Poe's Law is that it involves the line where it becomes hard to tell the difference. Which means that yes, some people do genuinely say stupid shit like this. However, in this case it being a Poe or not is irrelevant. It's still an incredibly stupid thing to say, and harms the ability of less idiotic social justice advocates from making their point without being lumped in with the idiots. Some of us were just suggesting that was the intent of the post to begin with, rather than an unintended consequence of genuine "SJW" behavior.
So, in short, this is something I think everybody here can agree on. MRAs, Gamergaters, and other groups who build on opposition to "SJWs" aren't to be supported, and neither are the extreme "SJWs" they oppose. Those of us who actually care about social justice issues need to take a stand to point out that no, the extreme and idiotic voices of our "side" are not the only ones. This is why I hate the term "SJW". It's a stereotype that can be applied accurately to some but paints everyone who cares about these sorts of issues with the same brush. By complaining about SJWs, even without supporting MRAs or others on the "other side" of the issues, it strengthens the stereotype that people who care about social justice are unreasonable people who say and do outlandish things. Some are, certainly. However, more rational voices shouldn't tolerate them, and neither should we let them taint how others see us.
The term "social justice warrior" is a caricature of social liberalism gone bad; it's not something to be held up as a respectable image. (No, I don't hold SJWs as a "sacred cow", I just simply hate the term being used for anything and everything someone finds objectionable.) Nor is it something to paint an entire side of such a broad issue as being. By letting the SJW stereotype go unchallenged, we drive people into thinking that maybe the MRAs aren't so wrong after all, maybe the Gamergaters were on to something. I've seen it happen. This is the harm that the extreme voices do. All we were saying was that maybe it was being weaponized by people on the side of MRAs, or who just find SJWs amusing to make fun of.
TL;DR: Horseshoe Theory exists, people make inane statements from both sides. That doesn't mean that because there are genuine SJW types, that we have to support them just because we share the same side of the horseshoe. Is there anything in that that anyone has any specific objections to?
