Today's reminder: Jesus' commands to take care of the poor were not addressed to government but to you and me.

They were addressed to his disciples, to the whole community of his followers. You often say you want government to be Christian, Bryan; if it didn't care for the poor, it would hardly be following Jesus's commands or representing the Christian community, now, would it?
If you would do your part to help the poor, then the government wouldn't have to. When conservatives claim to follow Jesus on one hand, then complain that their tax dollars are going to help the poor on the other hand, you're nothing but a bunch of hypocrites.
Unless you're using all of your income over what you need for minimal subsistence to help the poor, you're a hypocrite. Jesus said, "Help the poor," not "Help the poor if it doesn't inconvenience you." Remember that "sell all you own and give it to the poor" thing?
So, have you sold all your possessions and given the money to the poor yet?
If you don't care about what Jesus commanded, why should we?
Your ilk really love to find ways to get around Jesus' Social Justice teachings huh?
Just admit it. You hate the Nazarene, prefer the Hebrew Testament & Paul's pronouncements (especially the spurious stuff he never said) and worship The Beast of Revelation & Mammon.
Then go do it. Don't waste storage space reminding others. Seems simple enough.
Unless a lot of reading into it is involved that I'm too lazy to do, not entirely sure why this is here.
The failure for enough upstanding individuals to generate a society that genuinely allows for a reduction of poverty, equal opportunity and social mobility is precisely why welfare is a necessity for the vulnerable. Instead of preaching frothing hatred against the gays and non-believers you could start a movement that pushes for an end to poverty, because the efforts of fundies commonly hinders the poor through their stubbornness with regards to their beliefs surrounding their more favoured subjects. If you do this you will be living up to what you know God desires, instead of spewing what may be meaningless words.
If Christians had done a reasonable job of taking care of the poor the government wouldn't have needed to step in. As it it, Christians tend to make tiny, token efforts toward helping the poor that fall far short of the actual needs.
So you HAVE sold all your possessions and given the money to the poor? Good for you!
Isn't the government made up of "We, the People"? Or rather, shouldn't it be? I know yours are more like "We, the Corporate owners".
As the people comprise the government your argument is invalid. Indeed, even in a dictatorship the government is human and comprised of individuals. Jesus spoke to every individual when he dispensed wisdom and compassion.
Divine or not that was advice worth listening to.
I actually agree with Bryan Fischer here, end welfare and big government, or limit it to voluntary contributions. Liberals can give 50% of their income on their own, just count us out. We'll pay for the basics, police etc. and that's it.
"Which is your escape clause for hating welfare, you classist, hate-filled little cunt. "
Ah the typical left-wing tactic of accusing people of being "haters".
Please give me a rational explanation for why people should give 40%, 50% or 60% of what they earn to the government? They earned it, you're not entitled to it. A lot of it isn't even managed properly, it doesn't help the poor, it goes to fund big business friends of politicians through what is known as corporate welfare, i.e. crony capitalism.
You would do best to encourage private charity if you want to help the poor. And of course nobody is stopping you from giving half or even almost all your income to the poor.
Confused?
So were we! You can find all of this, and more, on Fundies Say the Darndest Things!
