What is it about these "vegan cat" quotes we're getting of late that sets me off? In all the stuff I've read on here over the last year or so I can't recall ever actually wanting to hunt someone down and perform emergency dentistry on them with an aluminum baseball bat. Something about these genuinely pisses me off more than any religious fundie, bigot or sexist. I suppose it's the entirely helpless companion animal tossed into the mix.

Pray tell, if cats were meant to eat plants then why in the name of Moses on a pogo-stick would they have sharp teeth and claws for hunting? I'm pretty sure there are no wild herds of cabbages out there that pose a danger to life and limb in collecting as food. Plus, you know, that whole a cat needing a certain level of taurine in their diet and how plants give you absolutely zero of it.
Seriously thought, if you're not going to feed any animal, be it a cat or dog or whatever, the proper sort of diet, you've got fuck-all business in owning a pet in the first place and should be arrested for animal abuse if you do.

Many people on the internet love cats, but there's no denying that they are vicious little brutes. Even if it were possible to maintain a healthy cat on a vegan diet (BTW: it's not possible) the cat's still going to go out and kill other animals just for kicks.
As it is their nature, cats cause animal deaths by their very existence and anyone as squeamish as Infinity about that has no business owning a cat.
If you're so concerned about this, don't get a cat . I mean seriously. How can that plausibly be a worse scenario than either of the ones you describe, in terms of animal suffering? Even if the cat has to get put down because you didn't adopt it at least it's quick! (I've never died of malnutrition before but I imagine it's a pretty miserable process.)

To be fair, this part is true.
We had cats when I was a kid. We fed the cats dry food which was more or less free of animals products. The cats complemented their diet by catching ans eating mice and chipmunks outside. They very often dragged a dead mouse into the house and ate it up right there on the kitchen floor.
Problem solved.

I remember seeing a feral cat strolling past the window. Ten minutes later, it returned with a dead mouse in its mouth ... they're very efficient hunters! I'm sure the mouse didn't enjoy the experience any more that the cow that made someone's hamburger.
Someone found that a dragonfly is 85% successful in its forays. Imagine living in the small insect world where enormous predators the size of aircraft carriers (compared to you - dragonflies have been called the B-52 bombers of the insect world) were a constant threat yours, your families' and friends' existence every time you left your home for food. You have the arrogant luxury of being on the top of the food chain and have made the arbitrary decision to survive by avoiding the killing of things that are members of particular biological sub-kingdoms.

Going by InfinitelyStupid's reasoning, and I do use the term lightly, why not just shoot the cat and all other carnivores? Better yet, why not wipe out all of humanity to prevent further environmental damage? Of course, the quickest, most effective way to do that (off the top of my head), would be to expose all areas inhabited by humans to something horrible like atomic hellfire. Wait, wouldn't that destroy Earth's biosphere entirely? Well, I guess it's best to do it all at once, we wouldn't want to cause unnecessary suffering, right?
And that's pretty much all there is to what may be called Emiya's Dilemma (if you know what I mean). The needs of the many may outweigh those of the few, but how many are the few?

I know what you mean. I couldn't count the number of times I've seen vegans deny that humans are omnivores, insist that we're natural frugavores and ignore any and all evidence to the contrary.
Humans have kept cats for thousands of years BECAUSE they kill mice and other rodents that destroy vegetable and grain fields, silly! If you don't want animals killed to make food, you're basically fucked. Something, or someone, killed the pests threatening your carrots and kale, too.
